Update: The first public test for Street Fighter 5's new online tournament mode begins tonight at 6 p.m. PT though players may want to show up an hour earlier in the Discord for orientation / instructions. Brackets are also now live on the website which appear as though they should automatically update throughout the process along with including estimated start times for each round.

Each bracket for this event is broken up into 64 players each while the bracket itself offers some nice quality of life features showing what characters everyone will be playing and their league points which you can see an example of in the new gallery in the story.

Earlier:Capcom quietly revealed their plans for an Online Tournament Mode in Street Fighter 5 earlier this year following an innocuous update, but it appears as though we'll get to try it out for ourselves very soon to see what all the upcoming feature will have to offer.

An open beta for the Online Tournament Mode is scheduled to take place on December 21–22 though spots will be given out at a first-come, first-serve basis with registration opening up next Monday, December 16.

There will be 512 planned slots open for the Saturday singles tournament while a 3v3 team event will then take place on Sunday open to 64 groups to try out the new online battle structure.

Players who participate in at least one of these online brackets next weekend will receive 10 free Fortune Tickets to use in Fighting Chance plus a special "eSports Player" title to use in the game.

Looking at the previous closed beta details suggest the mode can be set to single or double elimination brackets along with a number of other options like hardware, rank, game sets, character select, number of players, banned stages and banned characters.

The tournament mode will seemingly serve as the backbone of Capcom's efforts to gather teams worldwide for the Intel World Open next year which they seem to be banking quite a bit on.

"This new mode will blow [Battle Lounge] out of the water in terms of scale," said Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono in an interview last month. "We're still working out details in the beta, but it'll certainly be dozens, hundreds of people that can take part in a tournament at the same time. We're fine-tuning that and that'll be ready in the coming months."

Only players from the North American region are allowed to enter the upcoming open beta though Capcom says they'll be testing the feature soon for other parts of the world. Players on both PlayStation 4 and Steam can participate, however.

No firm release date has been given for the Online Tournament Mode, but since it is not launching right after Capcom Cup this weekend, we might be waiting until Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition's official launch which isn't until February 14, 2020.

A full list of rules and times are available on Capcom's website, and prospective players will need to have a Discord account to register for the open beta next week.
