New character reveal for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate feels highly likely at The Game Awards despite the lack of confirmation

We recently learned that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Jump Force, Dead or Alive 6, Mortal Kombat 11, and Samurai Shodown are nominations for The Game Awards' Fighting Game of the Year. Considering Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's record breaking 15 million sales, many feel that Nintendo will be taking the prize this year.

In addition to the awards, there were a number of reveals that kept fans engaged to the yearly show last time. NetherRealm Studios, for example, opted to hold onto the Mortal Kombat 11 announcement for this specific event.

For Smash fans, the first character of the Fighters Pass was unveiled just before the game was officially launched to the public. It was at the The Game Awards 2018 where we learned about the inclusion of Joker from the Persona series.

What does this mean for this year? Should gamers expect something new for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

As of right now, we have Joker, Hero, Banjo-Kazooie, and Terry Bogard of the Fighters Pass as playable combatants. However, the Fighters Pass serves as a bundle for five different characters (along with associated music and stages).

In other words, there's at least one more roster addition that's waiting to be shown. Of course, we also know about the existence of characters coming to the game beyond the Fighters Pass. Like with the previous choices, Nintendo is providing a list that Sakurai is able to choose from.

It's no surprise that Nintendo hasn't revealed the identity of the fifth fighter. This seems to indicate a high likelihood that the company might be saving something for this year's show.

Having said that, it's important to understand that nothing is set in stone at the moment. Before last year's event, Reggie Fils-Aimé — the now retired president of Nintendo of America — promised that they'd have something to reveal since the game's release was scheduled so close to the ceremony.

As for this year, this been no such promise. Still, fans were very suspicious of Masahiro Sakurai's Tweet regarding this year's Game Awards.

He noted why the game is eligible for this year despite it coming out in 2018. Funnily enough, he also remembered how Joker stole the show last year.

It might be a bit of a stretch to think of this as any sort of hint, but the possibility of a reveal does feel quite strong.

You'll be sure to want to tune in on December 12 to see the show live.
