Obscure 90's fighting games given new life with the Breakers Collection coming to consoles and PC in 2020

The fighting game boom of the 1990's produced so many classic hits that are still played to this day, but there are likely even more that have been largely forgotten to the sands of time — with many of those titles hailing from SNK's NeoGeo system.

One of those series will be given new life over two decades since its initial release with Breakers and Breakers Revenge being bundled together to form the Breakers Collection. The publishing team over at QUByte Interactive recently announced that the obscure and cult classic fighting games will be coming to consoles and PC in 2020.

Developed by the Visco Corporation, who are still around yet haven't released a new video game in almost 20 years, Breakers and its updated form closely follow the SNK fighting game formula of the 90's in execution with a cast of distinct oddballs that still stand out.

While it may pop up at the odd tournament as a side game or on YouTube, Breakers and especially Breakers Revenge had very limited releases outside of Japan making a game already tied to the NeoGeo even harder to find and play without the help of emulation until now — or if you managed to pick up its Dreamcast release from 2017.

Breakers is still highly regarded for its strong gameplay and decent presentation though it also added the unique distinction with mirror matches that no other fighting game I can think of has really done since.

Instead of making the second player a pallet swapped version of the fighter, Breakers will actually change the character into a clone with a differing appearance and name but with the same move set.

Unfortunately, the publishers haven't released many details, so we don't have much to go off for a release window outside of somewhere in 2020 nor do we know what specific platforms Breakers Collection will launch on. The collection is also said to sport a "range of new features" though we don't know what those will entail yet either. You can check out the announcement trailer for the project below weird illustrations and all.
