Leffen vs. Salem in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — a bitter rivalry, years of research, and a surprise Hero

It finally happened. TSM|Leffen and Salem met in bracket during a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament. This match up occurred at Super Smash Con 2019.

To put it as nicely as I can, this is a rivalry where both players... don't really like one another very much.

Most members of the Smash community are probably familiar with Leffen's early views that Snake wasn't a good character which provoked Salem to make his "years of research" comment about how Melee wasn't truly part of the Smash community.

Despite these two's history, they still showed one another the proper amount of sportsmanship. They fist-bumped at the beginning then shook one another's hands once everything was concluded.

As if to commemorate what was happening, Salem even changed his tag to "Research" for this particular set. Not surprisingly, he went Snake in the first game. It was like he was trying to send a message.

Leffen stuck to his guns and went with his tried-and-true Pokémon Trainer. There would be no gimmicks on the part of Leffen.

Most probably would've guess that Salem was going to handily take Leffen on considering his past victories against other top Ultimate players. For the most part, it did appear as though Salem had the upperhand in the first game.

Despite Leffen struggling initially, he ended up taking the first game over Salem. Everyone in the crowd — including another of Leffen's rivals, Liquid|HungryBox — erupted in cheers for Leffen.

Their second match in the set came down to the wire. It could've gone either way, but Salem managed to keep his cool and clutch it.

As a result, the set was now 1-1. Whoever won this next game would win it all. The tournament itself wasn't important anymore...

Nerves were showing for both competitors. While Salem was doing some excessive rolling, Leffen ended up self-destructing.

For whatever reason, Salem opted to go with playing as Hero in the final match instead of Snake. Once again, both players really seemed evenly matched.

Amazingly, Leffen ended up defeating Salem. As Leffen popped off, Salem expressed some disappointment. Although it was early in the tournament, this was a major match that transpired.

Regardless, Salem stated that he was "happy that set vs Leffen happened regardless of the results."
