EVO Japan began back in 2018 as a way to expand the fighting game community's horizons even more into one of its biggest territories, and while that first year saw significant financial losses, the team behind the event are coming back for a third time.

During finals day at EVO 2019, Triple Perfect announced that EVO Japan will be returning in January 2020 at the Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Hall in the city of Chiba with three mainstage titles already revealed.

Tekken 7, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle and Soul Calibur 6 are the only headlining events announced at this time which is interesting considering Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition was not part of the initial tease despite being the main draw of the previous EVO Japans.

Some other notable absences from this initial reveal include Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Dragon Ball FighterZ, neither of which was at EVO Japan 2019. It'll remain to be seen if they'll be left out two years in a row.

EVO Japan 2019 featured SF5, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Soul Calibur 6 and King of Fighters 14, so Samurai Shodown also has a good chance of showing up in 2020 — especially after its strong representation this past weekend.

More main event announcements will be coming in the future though until then, you can check out a teaser for EVO Japan 2020 below which is set to take place January 24–26.
