Everyone is here and everyone is buying

With a good 20 years of franchise development that has catered both to general and competitive audiences alike, most everyone knew that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was going to be a success. What they might not have realized was that Ultimate was going to become the best-selling fighting game of all time... in just four months.

Nintendo has updated their Investor Relations report and revealed that Ultimate has now sold a whopping 13.81 million units since its December 19th release, technically giving it the highest sales numbers of any fighting game (yes, Smash is a fighting game) ever.

Some good efforts have been made by other big fighting franchises in recent years, as Mortal Kombat X sold over 11 million copies and currently holds the record for NetherRealm Studios. We'll see what the brand new Mortal Kombat 11 has to say about this in a few months' time, though.

Tekken 7 celebrated surpassing the 3 million mark last October while Street Fighter 5 clocked in at 2.9 million when stats were last updated in February.

The previous record holder for fighting games in general was actually Super Smash Bros. Brawl as it sold 13.3 million back during the days of the Wii. Smash 4 is an interesting case as it sold 5.36 million on the Wii-U and 9.49 million on the 3DS to total 14.85 across both platforms.

You could make the argument that it's technically more popular than both Brawl and Ultimate, (at least for now) but general assessments seem to view the handheld and console as separate entities.
