Sonic The Hedgehog's first movie trailer has arrived... and it's probably exactly what you feared

Sonic The Hedgehog has been a staple of the video game market for almost 30 years now — including getting his own fighting game and spot in Super Smash Bros. — though 2019 will mark the character's first time leading a major motion picture.

After months of teases and leaks, Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for the Sonic movie, and it appears to confirm just about every fear fans initially had about a live-action film featuring a blue, anthropomorphic hedgehog that can talk and run really fast. Oh and Jim Carrey is here too.

The trailer follows our heroes Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz, and his weirded out / reluctant partner Tom Wachowski, played by James Marsden, as they try to stay out of the government and Dr. Robotnik's clutches in order to save the Earth... from something.

This also gives us our first look at Jim Carrey's portrayal of Sonic's iconic nemesis Dr. Robotnik / Eggman where he seems to be very much Jim Carrey with just a splash of scientific evil. His initial design has a very different look than his classic video game counterpart wearing a slim black suit ensemble... and he has hair. The ending stinger though does reveal a more true to form appearance — bushy mustache and goggles included.

Of course Sonic's first spoken dialogue in the trailer would be the line "gotta go fast" as he races down a highway and appears to cause a giant power surge. This energy catches the eye of the United States military which brings on Dr. Robotnik to try and understand / secure its source.

Though it looks very much in the realm of our "normal" reality, the stinger does suggest that the film may get more fantastical considering we can see some giant mushrooms behind the altered Robotnik.

Sonic The Hedgehog's first movie is due to hit theaters in November 2019. You can check out the trailer below if you so dare.
