'The design of G is actually so messed up... the embodiment of everything that's wrong with Street Fighter 5' — MDZ Jimmy's review of G

Depending on who you ask, G's viability in Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition can range from being a ridiculous top tier or one of the worst characters in the game. Notably, Rohto|Tokido, RB|Gachikun, and Mago at one point listed G as one of the weaker fighters in Season 4. This is similar to the Season 2 Laura situation when Japan thought of her as being bad.

However, this is not an opinion shared by MDZ Jimmy — a Grand Master Ryu player. In fact, MDZ Jimmy has some issues with G's overall design philosophy and makes some compelling arguments about the problems revolving around him.

"The design of G is actually so messed up," said Jimmy. "It is actually the embodiment of everything that is wrong with Street Fighter 5."

Jimmy notes that G is on a "tier list of his own when it comes to forcing the character to deal with stuff without any escape options." He compares G to Balrog's ability to get in with an EX Dash Punch then force a guessing game — but he notes that G is an extreme case by comparison.

Specifically, G is stated to have a particularly strong V-Trigger that cannot be stopped easily. By going into G's extremely quick EX G Smash Under — which is arguably very difficult or impossible to react to — G can then cancel into V-Trigger for a dangerous guessing game, all while starting from full screen.

G also has excellent damage output. Any hit can potentially lead to dealing outstanding damage, corner carry, and a mix up all in one.

Supposedly, G is said to be balanced by his poor defense. MDZ Jimmy makes the case that there's no such thing as a character with "good defense" in Street Fighter 5.

The reason why G is said to have poor defense is because he doesn't have an invincible EX reversal or a three frame jab. Still, invincible EX reversals are extremely risky in Street Fighter 5 since the punish will result in a counter hit or Crush Counter. Essentially, these are too much of a gamble to rely on consistently for defensive purposes.

Despite having access to a powerful command grab, it is stated that G doesn't have to take the same sort of risks as Laura or R. Mika. G's disadvantages aren't quite as clear based on Jimmy's discussion points.

Do keep in mind that Jimmy will often use NSFW language to demonstrate his points. Regardless, it's an interesting perspective on G that really outlines why Jimmy believes G to be a problem.
