Lucas Films just dropped a new teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode 9. Subtitled "The Rise of Skywalker," fans have been given a solid look at what the final movie in the modern trilogy will entail.

Star Wars Episode 9 is easily one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, and our love for the series can't help but make us wonder if it's about time we finally saw a legitimate Star Wars fighting game enter the fray. Considering the landscape right now, it might actually be the perfect time for one — here's why.

It cannot be denied that when it comes to fighting games, Star Wars doesn't have much in the way of legitimate representation. Outside of Yoda, Darth Vader, and The Apprentice being guest characters in Soul Calibur 4, there haven't really been any good, competitive Star Wars fighters — no, Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi absolutely does not count.

Fighting games have seen a resurgence since the release of Street Fighter 4 back in 2009, and over the last couple of years or so there has been a large wave of quality fighting titles released. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Marvel vs. Capcom, King of Fighters, Dead or Alive, Soul Calibur, and virtually every other major fighting game franchise either has a main entry in their series on the market right now or on the way.

On top of that, smaller companies like Arika and French Bread are representing with great games like Fighting EX Layer and Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], and massive franchises like Dragon Ball Z even have a competitive fighting game out right now with Dragon Ball FighterZ (which fans never expected to happen). There is no shortage of top-notch fighting games to dive into right now, so why not add Star Wars to this list?

There are numerous active developers that could tackle a Star Wars fighting game right now, and with the franchise being under the Disney umbrella, there might be more opportunity for an actual fighter to come to fruition — especially considering how hard the company is pushing Star Wars products right now.

It has been over 20 years since the only traditional Star Wars fighting game (Masters of Teräs Käsi) was released, and it's probably about time we saw another crack at the genre. The Star Wars universe has an endless library of characters and content it could pull from, and with prominent characters like Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, and Poe Dameron being at the forefront of the modern trilogy, they'd be perfect candidates for the base roster.

Of course, I have my own character picks that I listed out for their potential inclusion in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite (since Disney also owns Marvel), but my choices still stand for a full-fledged Star Wars fighting game!
