Rayman joining Brawlhalla on November 6th — a potential playable Super Smash Bros. Ultimate appearance less likely now?

Shovel Knight is playable in Rivals of Aether and Blade Strangers but he's in... as an Assist Trophy

Back in March, we learned that Blue Mammoth Games — the indie company behind the Brawlhalla — joined Ubisoft. Just yesterday, we learned of a benefit that comes about because of this.

During Ubisoft's PAX East stream, it was revealed that Rayman would be joining Brawlhalla's roster. He is scheduled to be released on November 6th alongside the game's debut on the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Everyone can't help but think of this as greatly hurting Rayman's chances in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. There's no doubt that this character has received a number of requests throughout the years, but there's always been a question on whether or not Rayman was iconic enough for the Super Smash Bros. series.

What's particularly odd about Rayman and Super Smash Bros. is that Rayman actually made it into Super Smash Bros. 4... as a trophy. According to Masahiro Sakurai, when the development team asked Ubisoft to share their references for Rayman, they sent them data for a brand new 3D model that was rendered for the game — which apparently became the trophy.

Outside of this, Ubisoft actually had no other representation present in any of the Super Smash Bros. titles in any form. No other third party company has had a presence like this before.

Many became hopeful that Rayman would become a DLC character in Super Smash Bros. 4. Again, people are now hopeful that he is playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Hype levels were rising when a video that appeared to showcase Rayman on the character select screen for Super Smash Bros. 4. Unfortunately for many fans, Artsy Omni would come forward as the originator of the fake leak. This definitely did demonstrate an interest for the character.

Considering that Sakurai has already revealed that the project proposal for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was completed back in December 2015, this would mean that the roster has been finalized for a long time now. Nintendo would obviously have to obtain Ubisoft's permission to add Rayman into the game.

Ubisoft making such a move does seem to hinder Rayman's chances as a selectable combatant this time around. Notably though, Shovel Knight is a playable character in Rivals of Aether and Blade Strangers — but Shovel Knight is only an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Only time will truly determine if Rayman will be represented in any capacity in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Remember that the roster will be fully revealed to us before the game launches on December 7, 2018.
