Rumor: Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite update is happening, will be re-branded as 'Marvel vs. Capcom 4'

Prominent leaker Vergeben is back with more interesting claims

Grab your tinfoil hats, folks! It's rumor time, and rumor has it that not only is there a Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite update in the works, but it is set to be re-branded as "Marvel vs. Capcom 4."

These latest claims come from none other than prominent video game leaker, Vergeben. Over on Reddit, Vergeben recently shared some new information on the potential future of the currently dormant Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

To preface this, Vergeben has been accurate on a number of different claims, including correctly calling Ridley and Simon Belmont being announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate โ€” and when they were going to be revealed โ€” as well as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being in Injustice 2, which has pretty much become their most famous prediction. Vergeben has had some misses as well, though, so as always with rumors it is best to take what's written here with a grain of salt.

According to Vergeben, an update to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is definitely happening. "No one knows anything substantial," Vergeben wrote in response to a Reddit user. "Believe me. I've been asking around. All that is known is that an update is real and happening. No one has any details that have leaked out regarding what exactly is happening with it or what all characters it will be adding and etc. yet."

They go on to say that the characters who were originally predicted to be in a potential update are the most logical fighters to expect here, though still unconfirmed. Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Green Goblin, Wolverine, Cyclops, Psylocke, Magneto, Storm, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Daredevil, Asura, Lady, Gill, Rashid, Captain Commando, Nina, Deis, Regina, Gene, Vergil, Akuma, and Apollo Justice were all originally listed, though this time Vergeben only mentions Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Asura, Gill, Lady, and Rashid / Vergil specifically.

Over the weekend, Vergeben replied to another Reddit user saying that the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite update is in early development and that we likely won't be seeing anything official on it until next year. Both Capcom and Marvel being patient, essentially, as to not ruin the perception of the game again.

Vergeben appears very confident that the update to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite exists and is on its way. They go on to say that the game will actually be re-branded as "Marvel vs. Capcom 4" in an attempt to distance the product and the companies from the failure of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

"I should probably mention that when it does get announced, it will be called Marvel vs. Capcom 4," Vergeben wrote. I do not know what that could mean for the game itself and the changes, but it will be a complete re-branding effort to make people forget that MvCI existed. They are rinsing the shame of that away."

Adding further fuel to this Marvel vs. Capcom 4 fire is the recent discovery that former Capcom employee Peter "Combofiend" Rosas is working at Marvel Games. We were able to independently confirm Rosas' role at Marvel earlier this week, and Vergeben claims that Rosas has a hand in the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite update.

"After MvCI failed, Combofiend left Capcom and works at Marvel now as part of their games division," Vergeben said. "He was even in the credits of Sony's Spider-Man game.

"MvC getting another shot after how badly MvCI was ****** up is thanks in most part to Combofiend creating a dialogue between Marvel and Capcom, and managing to convince both sides to go through with it."

On the latest episode of the EventHubs Podcast, we discussed the potential implications Combofiend being at Marvel could have โ€” one of the major ones being an update to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Based on what Vergeben claims, Marvel vs. Capcom 4 is coming.

I will reiterate, the claims of a Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite overhaul are still rumor and should be taken as such.
