Japanese Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Challenger playlist was updated recently — sign that new characters and a Direct are inbound?

It's very likely that there are one or more private videos ready to be made public in a week or so

A new Nintendo Direct may be closer than you might think. This could be another Smash focused Direct like the one we got back on August 8th rather than a Direct that covers multiple Nintendo games.

Sneasel, a keen-eyed individual on Gamefaqs, noticed that the Japanese Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Challenger playlist on YouTube was updated fairly recently. This seems to suggest that one or more private videos are now present inside of the playlist.

Notably, this isn't the first time this has happened. Pahrooman on Reddit noted this occurrence over a month ago. Nine days later, we received word that there would be a new Nintendo Direct the next day which was supposed to announce Isabelle. Unfortunately, this Nintendo Direct was delayed for seven days due to a natural disaster in Japan.

This same Reddit user claims that they have a cached copy of the Japanese playlist. Supposedly, this individual was able to compare his cached copy to the one that updated three days ago and was not able to find any differences despite the notice of an update existing.

Again, this seems to indicate the possibility that there are one or more unlisted videos in the playlist beyond the 70 that we can see. Upon learning about this information, many have begun to forecast October 10th or October 11th as the next reveal date.

As for the English version of the same playlist, it was last updated on September 13, 2018 — the day Isabelle was actually revealed. This is consistent with the playlist updating on the day of reveals whereas the Japanese version of the playlist updates a week or so in advance.

In addition to every character that has ever been playable within the Super Smash Bros. series returning for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the newcomers announced so far are the Inklings, Ridley, Simon Belmont, King K. Rool, and Isabelle. We're also getting a number of brand new Echo Fighters — Dark Samus, Daisy, Chrom, and Richter Belmont.

Recently, Masahiro Sakurai warned fans that we shouldn't expect a plethora of new character announcements up until December 7th, when the game is released. This appears to align with what he said that he was hoping that we weren't expecting too many newcomers this time as they had made seeing the return of every previous fighter their number one priority.

"But it's a mistake to think that we'll keep pushing out new challengers until the release of the game at this rate. We've been firing the trigger a bit too quickly, so we're going to live a bit more sparingly from now on."

"But it's a mistake to think that we'll keep pushing out new challengers until the release of the game at this rate," he said during his recent Famitsu column. "We've been firing the trigger a bit too quickly, so we're going to live a bit more sparingly from now on."

We already have the confirmation of 72 different characters that are selectable (I'm counting the Pokémon Trainer as a single entity, the Mii Fighters as three separate combatants, and Echo Fighters as separately from those that they are echoing). It sounds like the final roster count isn't going to get much higher than this.

Not too long ago, an Amazon listing of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bundle showed a large portion of the revealed cast. Many took notice of the fact that there were two blank spots and Isabelle was excluded.

Based on the pattern of the arranged fighters, it was speculated that one of the returning veterans had an Echo Fighter: Palutena, Pac-Man, Robin, Shulk, Bowser Jr., Duck Hunt, Ryu, and Cloud. If Ken — as an Echo Fighter of Ryu — appears to be the most likely candidate.

The source of this rumor also indicated that Incineroar from the Pokémon series was also present in the roster. As for the identity of the mysterious Square Enix rep, there's a possibility that the team is already preparing future downloadable content for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

If these two are indeed the final characters, some might be disappointed to hear that there may only be two combatants left to announce. Both Ken and Incineroar are also unlikely to generate the same amount of hype as Snake, Ridley, Simon Belmont, and King K. Rool.

Another piece of evidence has recently surfaced that supports this "box theory" — or should I call it the "card theory" now? As revealed by an image that Burned Kelp posted on Twitter, download codes for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are currently on sale in Japan.

While the codes cannot be redeemed until December 7th, every character revealed so far is present on the card with two blank spots present. One of these blank spots is in between Duck Hunt and Ryu. The other is spotted to be after Isabelle.

Notably though, the other Echo Fighters appear after — not before — the characters that they are echoing. It's difficult to imagine Duck Hunt getting an Echo Fighter. Still, if there was a blank spot that was directly after Ryu, then that might be a little too obvious.

An image of Ken Masters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate surfaced on the internet over a week ago. Since then, fans have been debating about how "fake" or "real" this image might actually be.

A lot appears to be lining up for rumors about Ken's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The possibility of Incineroar is also looking like a notable possibility.

It's also worth mentioning that we haven't gotten any information about the mysterious mode that was teased during August's Smash Direct. This has been rumored to be named "Spirits" mode.

Masahiro Sakurai also revealed that we should learn about the game's entire roster before the inevitable release. There are currently only 64 days left until that actually happens.

Do you think we'll be getting an announcement for an upcoming Direct soon? If so, which characters do you think will get announced? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
