Every year, anticipation and expectations would run high for the "big three" at E3. The big three refers to the three major video game console companies — Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony.

Apparently, Sony will not have a running program for E3 2019. Game Informer was told that "as the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community."

According to their statement, Sony is exploring ideas to engage their community in "new and familiar ways." We'll be updated with the plans revolving these methods later.

When Game Informer asked Sony if they'll be holding a show adjacent to the big event, Jennifer Clark — PlayStation senior vice president of communications — confirmed that there will be no press conference from Sony at or around the time of E3 2019.

Notably, the yearly PlayStation Experience event for this year was also cancelled by Sony. For the past two seasons, Street Fighter 5's Capcom Cup event would take place during the PlayStation Experience. This year it will be taking place at the Esports Arena in Las Vegas.

Sony could potentially be dedicating their resources towards something big. Unconfirmed rumors suggest that Sony is targeting 2020 for a PlayStation 5 release or announcement.

Interestingly enough, Capcom has stated before that they plan to support Street Fighter 5 with updates up until at least 2020. This title is currently exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and PC.

It was reported that Sony had accumulated over 86 million sales of the PlayStation 4 console at the end of September 2018. With the recent success of Nintendo's Switch console, the race to win the next gaming generation may be upon us.

Since E3's inception back in 1995, Sony has been a major presenter every year up until 2018. 2019 will be the first year that Sony will be absent from.

Entertainment Software Association's press release has declared that the following companies are currently committed to participating at E3 2019: Microsoft, Nintendo of America, Activision, Bethesda Softworks, Capcom, Epic Games, Konami Digital Entertainment, Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive Software, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
