Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is offering a free post-launch character if you pre-purchase or register the game before January 31st. It's... the Piranha Plant from the Super Mario series.

It's also been confirmed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have DLC content. Each character will come bundled with a stage and multiple music tracks.

The Fighters Pass has also been announced. This means that there will be at least five characters that can be acquired through paid DLC. It doesn't appear that the Piranha Plant is part of this package.

Sakurai has emphasized that development of these new fighters has not started yet. They're starting from scratch. These will NOT be Echo Fighters.

The Fighters Pass can be purchased for $24.99. If you want to purchase the characters individually, they'll cost about $5.99.

DLC is scheduled to be released up until February 2020.

The Piranha Plant's attacks include the ability to spit poison, blow spiky balls upwards, and even withdraw into its pot for long-ranged attacks. This looks like a particularly tricky combatant.

Despite just being a simple baddie of the Super Mario series, this is a full-fledged character — not just an Assist Trophy like Isaac or Shadow. Although this creature doesn't look particularly mobile, it's still capable of running and grabbing.

Its up special appears to have it spin its leaves in rapid succession, like a helicopter. The player appears to have a great deal of control of the Piranha Plant's movement while utilizing this recovery option.

While recovering, you can go up, left, right, and even down. There's no doubt that the Piranha Plant will only have a limited amount of time to fly where it needs to before it ceases its aerial movement.

Like the other fighters, the Piranha Plant is having an Amiibo developed. This will apparently be available on February 15, 2019. Notably, the character itself won't be ready "until a couple of months after launch."

For physical game owners, you'll only need to go through the Gold Points registration process in order to get this fighter. If you plan on getting the digital version, all you'll have to do is pre-order the game on Nintendo's eShop.
