E3 2018 Street Fighter 5 predictions: The next DLC character, a new stage, and potentially more

Here's what I expect to be shown during the expo next month

E3 2018 is fast approaching. For those unfamiliar with the event, the Electronic Entertainment Expo is one of the largest yearly video game conventions at which major and minor game developers take the opportunity to showcase their latest and upcoming products.

Every year, E3 is a spectacle to behold, with companies like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo holding large press conferences that provide fresh looks at upcoming games and also make big announcements.

E3 2018 is set to take place on June 12 - 14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California. Being a little over a month away, we want to take the opportunity to make some predictions of what we might see for our favorite mainstay fighting titles based on what we've seen from the companies in years prior and the current state of things.

To kick us off, we begin with Capcom and Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition. At the time of writing this, Street Fighter 5 is waist-deep into Season 3.

Of the six DLC characters expected this year, we've seen three enter the fray: Sakura, Blanka, and Falke. After a large set of balance changes -- and another smaller set shortly after -- fans are keeping a close eye out for what might be coming next.

Before we dive into what I believe is being showcased for Street Fighter 5 this year, let's take a look back at what went down at the last two years of E3.

E3 2016

Being the first time after launch that Street Fighter 5 made its appearance on the E3 show floor, Capcom was looking to come right out of the gate swinging.

Street Fighter 5's cinematic story mode, entitled "A Shadow Falls," saw a playable demo at the Capcom booth. Those in attendance were able to get hands-on time with a handful of the story's chapters for the first time ever.

In addition to a large-scale story mode, one of Street Fighter 5 Season 1's latest DLC characters was playable in versus mode. Ibuki, the Street Fighter 3 ninja, was available at the expo.

Originally, Ibuki was slated for a May release, however she was ultimately delayed until late June. She released alongside Balrog, who was not technically included in the E3 2016 build, but was discovered as playable in one of the later chapters of the story mode, which some attendees were able to get to and try him out for a short time.

E3 2017

The following year, Street Fighter 5's representation was dialed down quite a bit due to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite being Capcom's main focus.

Though there were Street Fighter 5 kiosks that allowed attendees to get their games in, there wasn't much in the way of new content to experience.

Outside of the small, E3-specific tournaments we usually see each year, fans were able to play as all of Street Fighter 5's currently released characters -- with Ed being the latest back then.

E3 2018 predictions

With Street Fighter 5 back in the limelight after its Arcade Edition update back in January of this year, Capcom has an opportunity to once again wow fans with their latest content.

Season 3's newest DLC fighter, Falke, just saw her official release late last month. Based on the Season 3 character line up image that was revealed back when Arcade Edition was, we should be seeing fan-favorite criminal Cody join the battle next.

I would be shocked if we don't see Cody playable at E3 2018 in some way, shape, or form. Based on the release schedule for Season 3's characters so far -- Sakura in January, Blanka in February, and Falke in April -- I believe that Capcom will skip the month of May and hold Cody's reveal for the expo.

If that's the case, that would mean we will likely see his official release date hit sometime at the end of June.

A character every other month is what Capcom had originally intended for their DLC practices, so my money is on Cody in June. However, if they are looking to expedite the release of Season 3's combatants, we could even be looking at Cody's release this month and G -- a Street Fighter series newcomer -- as the main focus for E3 this year.

On top of that, Capcom is currently selling their special Capcom Pro Tour DLC that includes new costumes for Akuma and Sakura, the Champion's Choice outfit, and a new stage. A percentage of the proceeds are placed into the prize pool for the Capcom Cup, which is the tournament circuit's finale at the end of the year.

There's a good chance that the new M. Bison-themed CPT stage will be available at E3, and we might even see RISE|MenaRD's Champion's Choice costume for Birdie.
