Super Smash Bros. and bullet-hell inspired game Earth Romancer is now on Kickstarter

Crowd funding campaigns through the likes of Kickstarter and Indiegogo have been used as an evolving platform to pitch and develop games coming from larger studios like Obsidian to small teams like those that have recently released Them's Fightin' Herds.

Earth Romancer would fit into the latter category, but it is certainly not lacking in the areas of heart and dedication. Development is primarily being handled by one long-time FGC member who wishes to bring together fans from across the genre into a game everyone can enjoy.

At a glance, the game seems to take much of its gameplay inspiration from Super Smash Bros. Melee with the Kickstarter's video stating that it will feature all of the techniques found in the Nintendo classic and then some. Earth Romancer also takes inspiration from more classic fighting games as well as Touhou fighters and bullet-hell games.

Perhaps the most interesting new mechanic shown in this game is a paradigm shift that allows characters to change up their moves mid-combat to adjust to situations where your focus changes between better offensive, defensive and recovery options.

Earth Romancer has been in development for two years, and developer Lunar Hare Studios is looking to use their relatively small Kickstarter campaign to add online play, new characters and make their way to Steam early access.

Check out stills from the game below and videos after the jump detailing the game's systems plus alpha match footage. There is also a playable alpha of the game available to download on their Kickstarter page.
