Bandai Namco unveiled one of their latest fighting game projects during E3 this week. Jump Force is an arena-style fighting game that brings some of the world's most popular manga / anime characters together for 3v3 battles.

Among the playable roster we'll be seeing Dragon Ball Z's Goku and Frieza, Naruto from his self-titled series, and Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece. The official reveal trailer also teased two characters from Death Note, however, it appears as though they won't actually be playable fighters in Jump Force.

In a recent interview, Jump Force producer Koji Nakajima confirmed this information, GameSpot reports. According to Nakajima, these characters will only be a part of the game's story.

"This game is going to feature a story around this unique situation, and that's where Death Note comes into play," Nakajima said through a translator. "To kind of weave the story together. So, Death Note is not [going to have] a fighting game character."

Light Yagami and Ryuk, the two Death Note characters we see in the trailer, and their non-playable status was further confirmed by Bandai Namco public relations manager Nick O’Leary. Speaking to Comic Book, O’Leary explained that these characters will be more involved with the story.

O’Leary went on to say that Light Yagami isn't very action-oriented, which is one of the reasons for the character not being playable. Limitations that other characters have when interacting with Ryuk was also cited.

Right now, it's unclear how the Death Note representatives will fit into Jump Force's story mode.

Jump Force is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2019.
