Sakurai and the Super Smash Bros. team are 'hoping you aren't expecting too many new fighters,' but you'll be happy to hear why

The roster is already up to 65 characters, and it's probably not done yet

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is looking to be the biggest and baddest entry the franchise yet as Masahiro Sakurai and his team have made it a point to include every character that has made a Super Smash appearance thus far.

That means fan favorites such as Metal Gear Solid's Snake and Ice Climbers will be playable right alongside fighters with perfect attendance such as Mario, Donkey Kong and Fox McCloud.

There are more than 60 legacy characters now (that actual number sort of varies depending on how you view Pokemon Trainer vs. the Pokemon he commands, and other similar instances) and Smash Ultimate will be adding more on top of that, but maybe not as many as you'd hope.

During the huge Smash news drop today during the E3 Nintendo Direct, Sakurai spoke specifically on this matter to give excited fans an idea of what they should be expecting.

"We made including every single fighter ever our number one goal, so I'm kind of hoping you're not expecting too many new challengers," he stated. That said, we've already seen two newcomers in both Inkling and Ridley, so it's clear that surprises are still on the way.

Given the franchise's track record, we wouldn't be too terribly surprised to see a good handful of new characters make their eventual way into the game despite the Director's statements here. You can see the clip of Sakurai's quick talk by clicking the thumbnail image below:
