Rumor: Snake returns in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch, Minecraft to have presence

From the leaker who claims Ridley and Simon Belmont will be on the roster

Some time ago, we reported on the rumor that Simon Belmont from the Castlevania series, Ridley from the Metroid series, and Ice Climbers will be playable characters for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. title for the Nintendo Switch. This information came from Vergeben who has been both correct and incorrect with his "leaked" information in the past.

Calling that the Ninja Turtles would be Injustice 2's last DLC character seems way too far-fetched for someone to predict. Vergeben was also able to bring light onto the existence of Soul Calibur 6 before it was officially revealed at the Video Game Awards, despite the fact that he called that it would be announced two days later at the PlayStation Experience.

Interestingly enough, he also named "Grøh" who is a newcomer to the series before he was announced over a month later. Naming a character that nobody has ever heard of before probably isn't just a lucky guess.

With that said, Vergeben's track record hasn't been 100% accurate. He has also made claims that Sodom would be part of Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition's Season 3 roster and that Crimson Viper, Q, Necro, and Oro would be added via a free update.

For Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, we also never saw Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Green Goblin, Wolverine, Cyclops, Psylocke, Magneto, Storm, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Daredevil, Asura, Lady, Gill, Rashid, Captain Commando, Nina, Deis, Regina, Gene, Vergil, Akuma, and Apollo Justice enter the fray. Who knows what's actually going on behind the scenes for this particular title.

Now Vergeben is also claiming that he has heard from his source that Snake will be returning to Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Switch and that the game will see some presence from Minecraft -- whether that is a stage or an assist trophy is currently unknown. As with any leak, it is highly recommended that you take the information with a grain of salt.

Vergeben also mentioned that Goku Black in his Super Saiyan Rosé form would be a playable fighter in Dragon Ball FighterZ. Before we knew about these existence of these DLC characters via data mining, Vergeben called Broly, Bardock, Base form Goku (who apparently makes use of the Spirit Bomb), and Base Form Vegeta. With that said, he also claimed that Raditz and Zarbon would join as DLC but we've yet to see any evidence that supports that.

Late last year, Vergeben mentioned that a Nintendo Switch port of Dragon Ball FighterZ would be released. Recently, a leak that suggests that Dragon Ball FighterZ and Fortnite for the Nintendo Switch will be announced at E3 this year was backed up by Kotaku, Destructoid, and GameXplain.

While Vergeben did claim that Devil May Cry 5 would be announced at the PlayStation Experience 2017, he later commented that Capcom is withholding the announcement for E3 2018. Today, IGN confirmed that Capcom has registered a domain name for Devil May Cry 5 just eight days before E3.

There are also unconfirmed reports about Bandai Namco developing Metroid Prime 4 and Retro Studios working on a "Star Fox Grand Prix" title for the Nintendo Switch. Vergeben was apparently responsible for talking about these first as well.

So what could this all mean for this upcoming Super Smash Bros. game?

If it turns out that Simon Belmont is part of the roster, then it certainly stands to reason that Snake would be rejoining the cast. Both the Castlevania and Metal Gear franchises are owned by Konami. No reason was ever given as to why Snake was cut going from Super Smash Bros. Brawl to Super Smash Bros. 4 considering his popularity.

Claiming that the Ice Climbers will be returning isn't exactly a bold prediction. Everyone already knows that the Ice Climbers were only cut from Super Smash Bros. 4 due to limitations with the Nintendo 3DS and Masahiro Sakurai wanted to keep the rosters between the two versions consistent.

Sakurai has stated in the past that making the decisions to cut characters felt "stressful almost to the brink of death." More than likely, we'll see the return of the Ice Climbers in this upcoming title.

For many, the fact that Vergeben even mentioned Ridley is enough to convince that the leak is fake. Even Sakurai himself has made statements that Ridley is simply too big. One look at the Metroid antagonist as a boss character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and as a stage hazard in Super Smash Bros. 4 is enough to really showcase this.

Notably, Masahiro Sakurai has also made claims about the difficulty in creating a moveset for Villager and how far-fetched Pac-Man was before they were actually added into Super Smash Bros. 4. It is certainly possible that Sakurai's decision could be influenced upon due to the Smash Ballot that took place during Super Smash Bros. 4's lifespan.

Still, we apparently won't have to wait much longer to test the veracity of Vergeben's seemingly outlandish claim that Ridley will finally be playable. Vergeben has stated that Ridley will be announced at E3 this year.

As for Minecraft, it is considered to be the second highest selling game ever, under Tetris. While Tetris has sold over 170,000,000 units, Minecraft has sold over 144,000,000 units.

For now, the only confirmed details that we have about Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Switch is that the Inklings from Splatoon will be playable, Mario will return, and Breath of the Wild Link will be part of the roster. The game is also releasing sometime in 2018.

There were also a number of unidentified silhouettes present in the trailer that we are currently only able to speculate on. We don't even know if the game is a port or a brand new entry yet.

We'll be sure to find out more details at this year's E3.
