Designs for the original Broly of the Dragon Ball Z movies by Akira Toriyama depicted him with an adult Saiyan tail

Somewhere in production, Broly lost his Saiyan tail

While Akira Toriyama was typically not involved in the writing process of the Dragon Ball movies before Battle of Gods, he did often lend character designs for them. Although he does not appear to remember doing so, he was the one who drew Broly for the movie.

Since then, Broly has become immensely popular among the fans despite him being a non-canonical character. This popularity is what actually prompted the decision to make him canonical in the upcoming movie — Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

Broly is going through a bit of a reboot. He no longer appears as a somewhat petite and unintimidating Saiyan while in his base form. When he transformed, it was quite the upgrade in terms of pure muscle mass.

Apparently, Broly was actually originally going to have an adult Saiyan tail. Somewhere during the production of the original Dragon Ball Z movie, this idea ended up being scrapped.

It looks as though Broly stuck with the outfit that Toriyama drew for him. Of course, Broly appears to be wearing some sort of Saiyan Battle Armor in the new movie.

Check out the original designs that were created by Akira Toriyama himself below. Be sure to note the tail that never made it into the final product.
