A gorilla from Bloody Roar, a president, or possibly a Q clone: Let's recap the theories about Street Fighter 5's G

Season 3's final newcomer is next in line and we still don't know much about him

Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition's next DLC character, G, is a mysterious one. We've seen him in Arcade Edition's cinematic intro, pointing at the camera like the classic Uncle Sam "I want you!" poster, as well as in the promotional image for Season 3's fighter line up. And that's about it.

Very little is known about Season 3's final newcomer, but ever since he was first shown in the Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition reveal trailer, fans have been speculating on who or what he could be.

With San Diego Comic-Con 2018 coming up next week and Capcom's tendency to reveal something at the convention each year, I wanted to recap what people think about G in Street Fighter 5 so far. There have been several theories and each is more interesting than the last.

From Bloody Roar's Greg turned Neo Shadaloo squad member to the man behind all that gold found in Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition, there's quite a bit to dive into here.

Grab your top hats and your gold pocket watches, people, it's time for the G theories!

G is actually Greg from Bloody Roar

This is one of the earliest theories that surfaced about G. Gregory Jones, a.k.a. Greg the Gorilla, debuted in the first Bloody Roar title on the original PlayStation back in 1997.

This bulky fighter is an American wrestler who doubles as a circus ringmaster, and he has the ability to transform into a gorilla during battle. One of the most compelling pieces of evidence is the gorilla bit due to the appearance of a large gorilla character seen as a member of Neo Shadaloo at the end of Ed's Street Fighter 5 story ending.

In addition to the gorilla connection, both G and Greg have similar appearances. Both characters are tall, muscular, wear top hats, and even have facial hair that looks alike.

And lest we forget that Greg starts with the letter "G."

It seems like a bit of a long shot that a Bloody Roar character that first burst onto the scene nearly 20 years ago would make a return in Street Fighter 5, but the connections certainly are compelling.

G is actually Q / a Q clone

If there's one thing we can say for sure, it's that G has some connection to Q in Street Fighter 5. Not long after Arcade Edition was released, a listing for Season 3's story mode costume colors surfaced on the PlayStation Store.

What's interesting is that the promotional image used for the listing revealed all six characters' story mode costumes. If you take a look at G's, he is dressed up as Street Fighter 3 Third Strike's Q complete with mask, hat, and trench coat.

In Street Fighter 5, story mode costumes always have a direct tie to the character's backstory for the game — meaning they aren't just randomly designed and given to these characters. So, there's a chance that G is actually Q and we're finally going to get more information about who or what Q is.

Capcom has deliberately revealed little about Q over the years, but one portion of his story mentions reports of seeing him in several areas of the world at the same time. Perhaps there are actually clones of Q out there and G is one of them.

They do share the single letter name too.

He's behind all of the gold and the movie set theme in Arcade Edition

Another one of G's physical traits we see is the odd gold markings on his body. From what we've seen so far, he appears to have gold scattered along his arms and on his face.

Some fans (including myself) believe this might be tied to the new theme that came about with the Arcade Edition update. The overhauled HUD and character select screen features a lot of the color gold and we see references to what appears to be a movie set in several areas of the game including the intro cinematic, the character select screen, and even the camera shutter noise when a Critical Art meter becomes fully filled.

While this new theme for Street Fighter 5 could just be a simple design choice from the developers and have nothing to do with the actual story or characters, it does seem a little too coincidental to be nothing. If the two are connected somehow, though, it could be setting up for a new general cinematic story mode that involves G.

Hopefully, anyway.

G is a president in Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition / influenced by Abraham Lincoln

One of the first descriptions of G we saw noted that he is a "president" character. This came from a once avid leaker who shared the Street Fighter 5 Season 3 line up back in November of last year, saying that Blanka, Sakura, Sagat, a mayor (Cody), "another bae" (Falke), and a "president" (G) would be the game's DLC roster for 2018.

Based on his appearance, the president title seems to fit with G. We already mentioned his Uncle Sam pose in Arcade Edition's cinematic intro, but another contributing piece of evidence to this theory is G's resemblance to the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.

Late last year, we dug a little deeper and learned that Abraham Lincoln was actually a prominent wrestler back in his day. According to the National Wrestler Hall of Fame, Lincoln was "an awesome physical specimen at 6-feet-4, was widely known for his wrestling skills and had only one recorded defeat in a dozen years."

It's worth mentioning that each season of Street Fighter 5's DLC has included one grappler character among the pack. In Season 1 we had Alex, Season 2 was Abigail, and we have yet to see one in Season 3.

Considering Sagat is the only other character lined up after G and he is well-known for being a zoning character, it is likely that G will fill that role this season if Capcom keeps with the trend.

A tall, top hat-wearing grappler president? That's Abraham Lincoln and could potentially be G as well.

For even more G theories, you can check out BornFree's video that runs through some of the ones we discussed here and a few others.
