Akira Toriyama is keeping Broly's classic image in mind for the Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Some interesting information was revealed yesterday about the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie that's due for December 14, 2018 in Japan. We now finally know the identity of the antagonistic Saiyan that will be featured; it's none other than the Legendary Super Saiyan himself, Broly!

There's no doubt that there is a lot of popularity surrounding this particular character. In a recent statement that was released, Akira Toriyama acknowledged the popularity of Broly not only in Japan, but overseas as well.

To hear of Broly's popularity isn't too surprising considering his inclusion as a DLC fighter in Dragon Ball FighterZ. He along with Bardock are considered to be non-canon characters that have only been featured in the anime movies.

As a result of this, Toriyama's editor suggested including Broly in the next movie. While Akira Toriyama observes that he "apparently" drew the designs for Broly, he had practically no involvement with the anime at the time so he didn't remember the story content.

Broly served as the main antagonist for "Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan," "Broly: Second Coming," and "Bio-Broly." Toriyama has apparently watched these movies in preparation for including Broly into the Dragon Ball Super series while keeping true to the Saiyan's classic image.

Once the movie is released, we'll see an encounter between Goku, Vegeta, and Broly. Apparently the Frieza Force will also have a presence.

Notably, Broly first appeared during a time where Perfect Cell was the strongest opponent the protagonists had faced. When he reappeared twice more, things were starting to rev up into the Majin Buu Saga of the series.

Considering that Goku and Vegeta now have access to Super Saiyan Blue forms, Broly is very likely to receive an incredible power boost. This might be a reworked and rebooted version of Broly so their interactions from the previous movies will probably not be directly referenced.

It has been stated that the history of the Saiyans will have a major connection to the movie's plot. It is currently unknown if this is only referring to Universe 7's Saiyan history or if it also involves Universe 6.

While Jiren was the primary antagonist of the Tournament of Power Arc, Goku had a number of difficulties with a Saiyan girl named "Kale." Notably when she went berserk, Vegeta commented that she took on a form that was the "original Super Saiyan form."

Like Broly from the movies, Kale's muscle mass expanded greatly and seemed unstoppable for a time. Many moments featuring Super Saiyan Berserk Kale fighting Goku actually mirrored their his fight against Broly.

Looking back, was this when Akira Toriyama was reviewing Broly's original movies? If so, it gives us an idea on how he plans on potentially staying true to Broly's character.

At the conclusion of the Tournament of Power Arc, Goku mentioned that he wasn't able to activate his Ultra Instinct anymore. Perhaps we'll see this unique power return to take down the Legendary Super Saiyan?
