A prize pool worth over $600,000 this year

Capcom has unveiled the plans for their 2018 Pro Tour this morning.

Over on the official Pro Tour website, the company has shared all of the details on this year's tournament circuit, as well as the schedule of events.

Firstly, the CPT will once again feature Street Fighter 5 as its only game. This time, players will be competing in Arcade Edition / Season 3.

There will be a prize pool worth over $600,000 this year, so you won't want to miss out on the action.

Capcom notes that some changes have been made to the Capcom Cup qualification process that aim to streamline things a bit "while maintaining the prestige of winning Premier Events."

As always, the Capcom Cup will feature 32 of the world's best Street Fighter 5 players. Competitors will be able to earn their spot on the bracket by participating in CPT events throughout the year.

The first spot goes to last year's champion, RISE|MenaRD. Though he is guaranteed a place on the line up, Mena will have to compete in events for seeding and to win cash prizing from Premier and Regional Finals.

Mena's is the only auto-qualifying Capcom Cup 2018 spot this year. Everyone else will have to qualify by way of the Capcom Pro Tour Global Leaderboard.

Players who compete in CPT 2018 Ranking and Global Premier Events will gain points towards their Global Leaderboard standing. At the end of the year, Capcom will take the top placers on the Global Leaderboard and Regional Finalists to fill in the rest of the Capcom Cup bracket.

The CPT points system has been adjusted this year to better balance the point distribution. Point values have changed, and Capcom notes that the overall goal is to have a "more logical weighting around events."

More significance will be placed on winning Global Premier Events, and the number of players that will be rewarded with points at events has been reduced. Refer to the images above for the points breakdown.

2018 will also see the return of the Capcom Cup Last Chance Qualifier. This tournament will be open to anyone who has not yet secured a spot at the Capcom Cup and the winner will be rewarded with the 32nd and final spot on the Capcom Cup bracket.

Last year was the first time a Last Chance Qualifier was ran for the Capcom Cup, and over 150 competitors joined in for their chance at the gold.

As far as tournament structure goes, this year remains mostly the same. However, there are some important differences to note, specifically for points distribution and Regional Finals.

Premier events are back, and this year we'll be seeing 14 of them, as well as EVO and four Regional Finals. Winners of these events will be awarded with a substantial amount of CPT points, which will help players secure their spot at the Capcom Cup.

"This was done to ensure players earn a significant advantage for winning Premier Events and increase their chances to qualify for Capcom Cup at the end of the year," the CPT site reads.

Ranking events also remain a part of this year's tournament circuit, and they will once again be taking place in four different regions: North America (NA), Europe (EU), Latin America (LATAM), and Asia. Players from these regions will compete in both offline and online tournaments all across the world to earn Regional Leaderboard points.

After the Ranking Event season is wrapped up, the top competitors will battle for a spot in the Capcom Cup at the Regional Finals. The amount of CPT points awarded to Ranking Event winners and the number of players that get points has been slightly reduced this year.

Regional Finals are going to be a bit different this year. In 2017, a rule was put into place that prevented players from competing in a Regional Finals outside of their own region. This was to make sure that players competing in their own regions would qualify for the Capcom Cup.

"This year, the Regional Finals will include an open tournament, allowing a player from any region to compete for Global Leaderboard points, prizing, and Regional Leaderboard points (only for players in that region)," the CPT site states. "The Regional Finals Top 8 is restricted to only the top players from the respective region."

Both seeding and top 8 Finals participants will be decided using the Regional Leaderboard points after the Regional Open Premier tournament. The winner of the Regional Finals Top 8 will automatically qualify for Capcom Cup.

Online Ranking events are also back for CPT 2018. There will be a total of four Online Ranking Events per region and they will follow the same point structure as Ranking Events.
