MarkMan: 'I know that MvCI is being played. Hard to include a game that doesn’t have support. I’m not talking about Capcom...'

EVO representative further comments on why Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is absent from 2018 line up

Last night's EVO game line up reveal garnered perhaps more discussion about what wasn't revealed than what was.

After 18 years in a row of Marvel vs. Capcom representation, the fighting game community's biggest yearly event will not be featuring 2017's Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, much to the apparent surprise of many fans.

Head tournament organizer Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar offered an explanation as to why this decision was made, but seemed to attribute said call to waning interest from players.

Co-hosting the live stream reveal along with Cuellar was EVO's Global Business Development Manager, Mark "MarkMan" Julio. After seeing all the social media discussion and backlash for Infinite's EVO absence, he took to Twitter to discuss the matter.

Julio's tweets were many as he conveyed a ton of information and sentiments 280 characters at a time. You can read through MarkMan's statements here, but we would like to highlight one that caught our interest in particular.

The text below appears to absolve both Capcom and Infinite's fan/player base as central motivators for this decision:

MarkMan continued his Twitter speech, dialoguing with commenters on occasion.

"...we have had meetings with some pubs/devs about including their title as a “main” game at Evo. You know what? We don’t get the blessing that we hope for sometimes. We actively have to seek permission and/or content licenses to be able to include certain games," he said.

While MvCI will not make the main stage line up this year, after last night's reveal the Marvel crowd almost immediately began formulating a plan for a side tournament.

It appears as though Arizona's Armando "AZAngelic" Mejia of Misfits Gaming has taken point on this initiative.

"Thank you to the huge outreach and support for Marvel at EVO. I truly appreciate it. I'm already in talks with a few leads that I think will make this extra special---more than just a side game! Just need time, meetings, planning and emails now. Thank you for your patience," he tweeted earlier today.

It seems as though, because of its enthusiastic fan base, Marvel vs. Capcom will be at EVO one way or another.
