Dead or Alive 6 gets Mature rating from ESRB, surprising absolutely no one

Team Ninja's upcoming 3D fighting title, Dead or Alive 6, has received its official game rating from the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board). Much like you might have expected, the next installment in the DOA franchise has been given a Mature rating.

While violence is obviously a key factor in every fighting game to ever exist, Dead or Alive 6's M rating seems to stem from something else — its sexual themes. A game like the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 (and previous MK titles) earn the "Mature" label through massive amounts of blood and gore, and though the ESRB does cite blood, violence, and foul language as contributors to the rating for DOA6, the most prominent details seem to be from the sexualized stuff.

"A handful of costumes depict characters with narrow strips of cloth that barely cover their buttocks and/or pelvic areas," the ESRB writes on Dead or Alive 6's listing. "Some female fighters' breasts jiggle while standing or fighting. In some sequences, players have the ability to zoom in on characters' cleavage, posterior, or underwear, and take pictures."

The ESRB makes mention of additional violent scenes that include robots being cut in half by swords and a helicopter machine gun firing at characters on the ground, but that seems fairly innocuous and would likely fly in a title with a Teen rating.

Back in June, Dead or Alive 6's developers explained that the game would tone down the sexualization of its fighters. “We wanted to make a more cool and mature Dead or Alive this time, and to that end we made a conscious decision to make the characters less sexualized,” said Dead or Alive 6 director Yohei Shimbori.

Despite initial reports of the game's "jiggle physics" being gone — yes, that is exactly what you think it is — we later learned that that same mechanic would indeed be present in Dead or Alive 6, however, the jiggles would function more realistically.

In the same vein, Japan will see the release of the Dead or Alive "Strongest Package," which is a higher tier purchase option that features several added goodies including highly sexualized mouse pads and posters that prominently feature female character breasts and posteriors. The mouse pads use these body parts as the place to rest your wrist...

We haven't gotten the game in our hands yet, but based on the ESRB rating and description of the title it seems that Dead or Alive 6 still features enough sexualized content to earn it a Mature rating. Even if some aspects were toned down, there's still more of the same in the next installment of Dead or Alive.
