The main EVO Japan 2019 line up of games was announced early this morning over on the official EVO Twitter page. Several major fighting games that you'd expect on the event's card made the cut, but there were two big omissions that might leave fans scratching their heads.

Tekken 7, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Soul Calibur 6, Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition, King of Fighters 14, and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 make up the EVO Japan 2019 main games line up. As you probably noticed, massively popular titles Dragon Ball FighterZ and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are missing from the list.

Both games took the fighting game community by storm when initially released (and we're still in the midst of that craze with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate). Not having tournaments for either game this coming year is certainly peculiar.

Dragon Ball FighterZ was not a part of the line up at EVO Japan this past year as its release date fell a bit to close to the weekend of the tournament. With DBFZ being one of the most highly renowned fighting games of the year and so popular in the FGC, fans definitely expected it to be a part of the big show early next year.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's absence is also strange considering the game's predecessor, Super Smash Bros. 4, being a part of the main games at EVO Japan 2018. The release date of Smash Bros. Ultimate is far enough out from the event that unfamiliarity is likely not an issue, and in Dragon Ball FighterZ and Smash Ultimate's case there may be some licensing hurdles the EVO team could not overcome being that the event is overseas — though that is merely early speculation.

For comparison's sake, EVO Japan 2018's line up was as follows: Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, Tekken 7, Super Smash Bros. 4, BlazeBlue: Central Fiction, King of Fighters 14, and ARMS.

EVO Japan 2019 is taking place on February 15 - 17 in Fukuoka Kokusai Center.
