Mortal Kombat 11 was officially announced last night at The Game Awards 2018 in Los Angeles, California. After many months of speculation, rumors, and absences at other game expos, the next major installment in the gory fighting franchise has finally been unveiled.

Mortal Kombat series creator Ed Boon took to the stage to present the award for Best Sports or Racing title at The Game Awards. Before he could read off the nominees, the lights went out and lightning filled the room (the big screen on the stage). We were then treated to the big Mortal Kombat 11 announcement trailer.

Much like we saw with Mortal Kombat X's initial reveal trailer, Mortal Kombat 11's featured a cinematic sequence showing an intense battle between Dark Raiden and Scorpion. Fans were not given a look at actual Mortal Kombat 11 gameplay during the presentation, but new screenshots of the game were released this morning that give us our first in-game look at NetherRealm Studios' upcoming fighting title.

The new images were shared over on Steam's official listing of the game. Dark Raiden and Scorpion see more time in the spotlight as they engage in a vicious battle in these screenshots.

While a cinematic trailer isn't always telling of what we can expect to see from a character's playable counterpart โ€” as the developers often take liberties there to make things as exciting as possible โ€” today's Mortal Kombat 11 screenshots provide a better idea of what tools Dark Raiden and Scorpion will be harnessing in battle.

Scorpion can be seen attacking with his classic spear and sword, and one image looks like it might be showing us a fatality or some other move that involves a cinematic animation. Dark Raiden mainly focuses on his electrocution moves in these screenshots, but we do see what appears to be a rush punch of some sort โ€” charged with electricity, of course.

Mortal Kombat 11 is already available for pre-order. Fans can purchase the standard edition for $59.99 USD or the Premium Edition for $99.99, which includes the base game and the Kombat Pack.

Mortal Kombat 11 is set for release globally on April 23rd, 2019.
