What 2018 Video Game Awards announcements might fighting game fans be in store for?

There's potential for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Samurai Shodown, a new NRS game, Soul Calibur 6, and maybe a few surprises too

The 2018 Video Game Awards will debut on December 6th — tomorrow. You'll want to tune in at 5:30 p.m. PST / 8:30 p.m. EST.

Although this show has typically been about giving out awards for the games that have been released in the last year, many developers are starting to announce titles and content at this event. You can almost think of it as a miniature E3 presentation.

Last year, Bandai Namco gave us the announcement of Soul Calibur 6 at the 2017 Video Game Awards. Could we get a reveal of something that could top that?

Very recently, King of Fighters 15 was shown to be a work in progress title. It's unlikely there will be any gameplay shown as Yasuyuki Oda of SNK has stated that the title isn't even in the pre-production phase yet.

Notably, Capcom Cup will begin on December 14th so it's unlikely that we'll get the next Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition character at the Video Game Awards this year. Many theories have been flying around regarding the confetti at the Red Bull Conquest event. Still, there's reason to believe that Capcom is working on a new AAA title that will supposedly surprise everyone.

There are a lot of rumors going around about potential announcements at the 2018 Video Game Awards. Let's take a look at some of the possibilities that seem the most plausible.

Nintendo announcement? Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC?

This week is a big one for Nintendo fans. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be releasing on December 7th — just one day after the 2018 Video Game Awards ceremony.

A conversation between the president of Nintendo of America — Reggie Fils-Aimé — and host/creator of The Game Awards — Geoff Keighley — has spectators talking. Specifically, Reggie mentioned that Nintendo will "have to do something special" for the show as if to make up for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stealing the spotlight.

Nintendo of America would later tell Twitter followers to tune in during the Game Awards show. Interestingly enough, they specifically mentioned how this event is taking place before the official launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

If rumors are to be believed, then we could potentially be getting a Square Enix representative as the first DLC combatant, not including the Piranha Plant. Could Nintendo be revving up for one last big reveal to really nail some extra sales for what appears to be their flagship title of 2019? The possibility is certainly there.

In particular, speculation has led many to believe that a Dragon Quest character will be playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Notably this series is extremely popular in Japan.

Of course, it's also worth mentioning that we've barely received any information at all regarding Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3, Animal Crossing, and the upcoming Pokémon game for the Switch (not Let's go Pikachu and Eevee). All these titles are scheduled for a 2019 release.

Mortal Kombat 11?

Netherrealm Studios has been silent about their next project for quite some time now. Many were expecting a reveal of Mortal Kombat 11 at E3 2018, but it simply didn't happen.

Since then, Ed Boon has confirmed that the next game is in development but we know basically nothing about it. He also stated that they are working extremely hard to make this next game their "best game yet."

Maximilian has become interested in a rumor that suggests that Netherrealm Studios has been working on Mortal Kombat 11. Supposedly, this will have a pretty in-depth adventure mode.

The 2018 Video Game Awards show might be the perfect time to finally unveil whatever this massive project is. For NRS to stay as silent as they have been, it must be a pretty massive title.

Samurai Showdown gameplay?

King of Fighters 15 was revealed earlier today. Unfortunately, we only have images that prove its existence. Since the title isn't even in pre-production yet, there probably isn't any gameplay to show off right now.

This leaves SNK's Samurai Shodown title that was announced earlier this year. Since September, we've only gotten the one trailer.

Is it finally time to reveal some new characters and more gameplay? This might be the perfect opportunity to do so.

While do know that the game is slated for a 2019 release, we don't yet know the exact date of arrival. Perhaps a new trailer could give us the release date.

Next Soul Calibur 6 DLC character?

During the Tekken World Tour finals, it was revealed that Marduk, Armor King, and Julia would join Negan of the Walking Dead series as the final combatants for the Tekken 7 Season 2 pass. We probably shouldn't expect anymore announcements for Tekken 7 so soon afterwards.

So what does that leave for Bandai Namco? Obviously they're the developers of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate but they also have the Soul Calibur series under their belts too.

NieR: Automata's 2B was announced as a guest DLC character back in October. Of course, we still don't have a release date for this particular fighter.

We may get that along with the announcement of another fighter. There are a number of fan favorites that are still absent and plenty of room for more guests too.

Remember that it was originally the 2017 Video Game Awards event where Soul Calibur 6 was initially unveiled. Another reveal here just makes sense.
