Nintendo might be making a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announcement at The Game Awards this week

A clip of Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé at E3 could hold a big clue

The Game Awards 2018 is taking place this Thursday, December 6th, and the annual event is gearing up to show the world which games this year were the best of the best. Alongside the ceremony, we'll be seeing announcements from different gaming companies, and that might include Nintendo and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

As most people on the planet know by now, Smash Bros. Ultimate is officially coming to the Nintendo Switch this Friday, December 7th. With The Game Awards taking place the day before the game's launch, one might expect one last reveal before the public gets their hands on the crossover fighting title.

Of course, the prospect of a Nintendo announcement at The Game Awards goes further than simply perfect timing. Apparently, Nintendo of America president himself Reggie Fils-Aimé said something back at E3 2018 that has people paying close attention.

Twitter user Shesez recently shared a snippet of the original clip that featured Fils-Aimé and host/creator of The Game Awards Geoff Keighley talking about the launch dates for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Game Awards 2018. Shesez writes, "Going to make this real easy to figure out why Nintendo fans should probably tune into the game awards this year," isolating a statement from Reggie that could be hinting at an upcoming reveal.

In response to Keighley saying that Smash Bros. Ultimate is likely launching close to when The Game Awards is airing, Reggie had this to say: "So we need to do something special on your show."

While the announcement from Nintendo — if there is indeed one this Thursday — could be anything, there's an implication here that it could be Super Smash Bros. Ultimate-related considering the conversation between Keighley and Fils-Aimé. It's worth noting that Keighley himself also retweeted Shesez's tweet, which might add a bit more weight to it.

At this point in time, we know that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be seeing six additional characters join the game's roster after launch. Super Mario Bros. series bad guy Piranha Plant is being added to the roster as a bonus character (who will be free of charge for a limited time).

The other five are currently a mystery. If there's something in the pipeline for Nintendo at The Game Awards this week, it could range from minimal to pretty darn big.

Piranha Plant has already received an official gameplay trailer, so though new footage of him being revealed is possible, it wouldn't necessarily be that impactful. An official release date for piranha Plant might be in order, as all we know right now is that the character is expected within a few months after Smash Bros. Ultimate is released.

Nintendo could be aiming to knock it out of the park yet again and skip ahead to a DLC character reveal. Rumor has it that the first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate season pass will be another Square Enix representative.

This information comes from prominent leaker Vergeben, who has been accurate about several big Super Smash Bros. Ultimate reveals. Vergeben did not name anyone specifically, but Square Enix has a bevy of different IPs to pull from, and one of Super Smash Bros.'s most highly requested characters, Geno from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, also sits under the Square Enix umbrella.

There's a lot that could be shown this week, but as always we just won't know until the event arrives. Still, if you're a fan of Nintendo and/or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you might want to keep your eye on The Game Awards.

The show is airing on December 6th at 5:30 p.m. PST / 7:30 p.m CST / 8:30 p.m. EST. For information on how to tune in, you can visit The Game Awards' website here.
