How might G play in Street Fighter 5? Let's speculate on what we could see this weekend at EVO 2018

This character could have several of Q's moves at his disposal

At this point, I think it's fairly safe to say that Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition's next DLC character, G, is going to be revealed sometime this weekend.

All we know is that we don't know nothin' about this character, short of what he looks like and some small clues that might be hinting at something bigger. What I've been dying to find out — and I'm sure many of you have been as well — is what G will actually play like in Street Fighter 5.

With his announcement more than likely imminent, there is no better time to speculate on what kind of tools G might be equipped with in battle.

Personally, I believe G will in fact have grappler traits that will have him effectively fill that role for this season. I also have a feeling that his Q story mode costume might be tied to G's playstyle as well.

In Street Fighter 5 so far, we've seen a handful of characters that I refer to as "inspired-by" characters. These new warriors have a connection to a legacy Street Fighter character, usually utilize some of their tools in battle, and seem like a way for Capcom to capture the essence of a classic fighter while allowing them to take more liberties and add a new spin to them.

Some of the fighters that fit this bill are Zeku (has similar moves and a connection to Guy), Menat (Rose's apprentice and has some attacks that are similar), Ed (feels like he was inspired by Dudley in playstyle, but not directly connected to him), and Abigail (a potential counterpart for Hugo).

It's because of this that I feel that G might actually be a similar case for Street Fighter 3 Third Strike's Q. With this in mind, we might be able to get some idea of what the Street Fighter 5 newcomer can do in-game.

Dashing Straight

One of Q's main special moves is his Dashing Straight and its variations. I think G might have a similar attack at his disposal.

As it stands right now, Balrog does have something similar, so I'm not sure if we'll see a high and low variation for G. I could definitely see him using some kind of a rush punch, though, with an EX version that could juggle and lead to extended combos.

Capture & Deadly Blow

As of right now, I feel like the probability of G having a command throw is high. We may see an updated version of Q's Capture and Deadly Blow here, but with a similar trait to Abigail's command throw in that only the EX version allows for a follow up.

Traditional SPD

I also think that G might have a traditional command throw / SPD in his arsenal as an added threat. A character like Abigail has his running grab and his Abigail Smash command throw, and I think we'll see something similar for G in the sense of having one throw that leads to a combo and possibly positioning, while the other is more for big damage.

Gold Infection?

With G's skin having scattered splotches of gold on it, I can't help but wonder if we'll see an ability that allows him to infect his opponents with gold for an added advantage in battle.

A similar concept was put into place with F.A.N.G. and his poison, but hasn't really been explored since then. Perhaps we'll see something like this mapped to one of his V-Triggers that inflicts damage over time or steals Critical Art meter.

Slow and steady

From what we've seen of him so far, it appears that G is pretty large in stature. This gives me the impression that he'll be on the slower / harder-hitting end of things.

Bigger, longer-ranged normals that do solid damage might be his style here, with a slower walk speed and above average health. We might even see normals like Q's Big Boot-style standing heavy kick for Crush Counter or his ground pound crouching heavy punch.

If he does happen to have a rush punch of some sort, his walk speed might be on the slower end due to his ability to get in with the special move. Applying pressure with properly spaced normals and Dash Straights until he can make a move in close for command throws seem to fit with this character, in my opinion.
