Street Fighter 5's Menat could have been a pizza delivery girl, a gymnast, or could have been named 'Rita'

Capcom shares early development ideas for the Season 2 character

Capcom recently posted a blog over on the Japanese CFN website that details early concept designs for Menat, Street Fighter 5's latest character.

As we know her, Menat is a crystal sphere-wielding fortune teller who wants to impress her master.. Before the development team landed on this design, however, they ran through some interesting ideas.

One such concept involved her battling by using incense, while others were different variations of a magician. With Menat being a completely new character to the series, the development team went through many different concepts before deciding on the final one.

The Capcom blog was written entirely in Japanese, but our very own MajinTenshinhan has provided us with a full English translation. What follows is the full translated piece.

Good day, everyone. It's Menat, who uses Soul Power and her crystal ball.

She's the disciple of a very famous fortune teller, so we had a lot of ideas for her design.

-Pizza Place-worker and Assassin version-

She talks with a very cheerful and calm tone, but she's actually a killer. She does this to catch her opponent off-guard and defeat them - very similar to B.B. Hood from Darkstalkers. She works to bring in money to her family of 33 people. She was disowned by her master. That was this version's setting.

-Italian delinquent version-

This design was quite well-liked. When she was young, she was completely obsessed with delinquent manga. She loves Japanese manga and anime, and her first love was G*ku from Dr*gon Ball.

She also loves cosplay, but none of her friends must know (she would commit harakiri if they found out)." As long as you want it, you can do it!" is her motto, and without even realizing it, she woke up to the potential of Soul Power. That was this particular setting. Her name, at this point, was Rita.

-Magician version #1-

She's a magician as well as a fortune teller's disciple. She takes out small objects from her hat, and even sends birds created via Soul Power at her opponents. This is where we figured out we'd like her to use her Soul Power together with something when fighting.

-Magician version #2-

This one was also a magician, but a quite eccentric one. She puts Soul Power into her cards, and uses them to form swords and shields when fighting. She betrayed her master and sought to assassinate her, in this setting.

-Egyptian staff user version-

She uses a Egyptian Staff martial art called Tahtib. This is where we started gravitating towards her having Egyptian origins. She's cool, and has a very grown up air around her. Her hairstyle and decorations are very similar to what we ended up with.

-Uses incense-version-

She works at her master's shop, creating incense. She infuses the smoke from the incense with soul power and envelops her body in it to cover her regular powerlessness. She can even use the soul power to turn herself into smoke.

-Uses incense + staff user version-

She's very familiar with various health practices. As one of her health measures, she learns the staff art of Tahtib. She uses incense and water steam to enhance herself, and fight. She's actually realized, via fortune telling, that her life will be cut short, and is fighting against this cruel destiny. She was that kind of character.

-Uses gold dust-version-

We used the goddess Bastet for inspiration in her design. She fights through dance, and slippery movements. She has gold dust all over her body. It's used to harden her, as well as bring symbols and animals to life, to attack with. There was also an idea for her to have a move where she hardens her opponent with the dust and they end up exploding afterwards.

-Gymnastic version-

With this version, we had solidified her being from Egypt and using a crystal ball. Her clothes are very plain. She has less muscle than any other Street Fighter character, so she would fight using the crystal ball and soul power together, making fun of her opponent while doing so. That was our planned image.

-Traveller version-

A traveller who continuously moves to new places while practicing fortune telling. She travels across the world, searching for her master, who is missing. Inside her fortune teller-exclusive bag, she carries gold dust and incenses.

-Almost completed version-

A former gymnastics practitioner. She's good at moving her body, so using her natural flexibility together with soul power makes her a strong fighter, but her actual fortune telling isn't very good. She works hard every day at her craft, hoping to be accepted by her master. In the original silhouette we showed you for Menat, she was actually wearing cat ears. That was a remainder from this design.

And that about covers it. She's a brand new original character, so there are still many other design ideas we had for her. Please look forward to next time!
