Street Fighter cameos have existed in classic anime series Yu Yu Hakusho for 25 years, and I had no clue!

I cannot believe I never saw this before

To some, this story might be old news. But to BGCallisto on Twitter (who recently pointed it out), and now me, this is mind blowing.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi. It follows teenager Yusuke Urameshi who dies after being struck by a car while trying to save a child from the same fate.

Urameshi is ultimately revived by Koenma, the son of the ruler of the underworld, and becomes a spirit detective that has to face off against demons and evil in the world of the living.

Like many great manga series, Yu Yu Hakusho was made into an anime and first aired in Japan in 1992. The show was later licensed by Funimation Entertainment, and made its North American debut in early 2002.

As a youngster in the early 2000's, I was a big fan of Yu Yu Hakusho. For me, it was a close second to Dragon Ball Z.

Despite this, I never knew that there existed Street Fighter cameos in one of the show's episodes.

In episode 9, entitled "The Search Begins" and first aired in December 1992, Yuske and his schoolmate Kuwabara enter a competition to win the powers of Genkai -- an incredibly strong fighter. She will pass on her powers only to the fighter who is worthy, and naturally a ton of warriors show up to try and claim them for their own.

Among the crowd, we see characters of all shapes and sizes, and in several scenes there are blatant Street Fighter cameos. One shot shows Yuske and Kuwabara engaged in conversation, while Zangief stands right behind them.

We also see appearances by Dhalsim, characters that resemble Ryu and someone with Akuma-like beads that looks more like Retsu from Street Fighter 1, E. Honda, Chun-Li, and even Guile.

Below are screenshots of each cameo, thanks to pandumonium on Imgur.

When I look back now, these Street Fighters are clear as day. I don't know how I missed them initially, but it's awesome to see such a cool Easter egg in one of my favorite shows growing up.
