We heard yesterday that the defending Capcom Cup champion likely would not be participating in this year's event, and that has been solidified by Capcom today.

Du "Liquid|NuckleDu" Dang has dropped out of the tournament just under two weeks before it's to take place for reasons unknown at this point in time.

Under the "Rules of Succession" portion of the Pro Tour rules page, we find the following: "In the event the defending Grand Champion declines his automatic qualification, the automatic qualification shall be passed to the runner-up of the prior year’s Capcom Cup."

That means that last year's runner up, EG|Ricki Ortiz, will be filling in for Du in Anaheim this December 8-10.

Ortiz was not qualified for the final 32-player bracket this year, as she did not see the same success rate that she did back in 2016. She is currently ranked 84th on the global Pro Tour leaderboards, and has participated in nine events this year.

Capcom Fighters confirmed all of this via Twitter today, and you can see the full tweet by clicking the thumbnail here:

Ortiz has been a prominent member of the competitive fighting game community for nearly two decades with notable accomplishments in a multitude of fighting game titles over the years.

Her main character in Street Fighter 5, Chun-Li, was amongst the absolute best in the game's first season, but received substantial nerfs for the 2017 Pro Tour.

As such, we've seen many players stop using the Strongest Woman in the World, and rarely have we seen anyone crack Pro Tour event top eight brackets while using her this year.

Ortiz has branched out to using other characters such as Cammy in tournament, though has been using Chun in recent competitions as well. With this news, the Street Fighter community excitedly looks to see what Ortiz will bring to the table with this sudden Capcom Cup berth.
