The Ninja Turtles have had their own fighting games before their Injustice 2 announcement - let's check them out

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters and TMNT Smash Up

The announcement that the Ninja Turtles would occupy a single character slot in Injustice 2 was quite the surprise. Leonardo's statement to Mikey that they "fight as a team" was pretty telling of that.

Still, this isn't the first time we've seen these pizza loving turtles in a fighting game before. They've actually had a few games dedicated their battles.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters was released on the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and the Sega Genesis by Konami. Each version of the game was actually quite different and had unique rosters.

In the NES version of the game, the playable characters consisted of Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo, Donatello, Casey Jones, Hothead, and Shredder. Definitely the simplest version of the game...

As for the SNES, there were a total of ten characters. Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo, Donatello, Shredder, War, Aska, Wingnut, Chrome Dome, and Armaggon. The Rat King and Karai are boss characters here.

The Genesis version had Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo, Donatello, Casey Jones, April O'Neil, Ray Fillet, and Sisyphus as part of their roster. It also featured Triceraton, Krang's Android, and Karai as bosses too.

All three of these versions were developed by Konami.

Finally, the most recent fighter was a brawler like Super Smash Bros. It was called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Smash Up.

The playable characters included Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo, Donatello, Casey Jones, April O'Neil, Foot Ninja, Fugitoid (in the Wii version), Karai, Nightwatcher, Shredder, Splinter, and Utrominator. Since it was developed by Ubisoft, it also (strangely) allowed players to use the Raving Rabbid, Ninja Rabbid, and the Splinter Rabbid (references Splinter Cell, not Splinter the mutant rat).

For me personally, I've only had the opportunity to try out TMNT: Smash Up. I wouldn't mind seeing a second attempt at this sometime in the future.

Like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the online was pretty terrible. It was more of a "guilty pleasure" type of game. Still, I really did enjoy playing as Leonardo in it.
