Are Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's new DLC characters a sign of better things to come in the visuals department?

Black Widow, Winter Soldier and Venom are a little easier on the eyes than some of the game's uglier ducklings

"It's fun to play, but not so great to look at," seems to be a general sentiment toward the latest entry in the Versus series, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

Visual hiccups have plagued MvCI since long before its September release, and despite some alterations to characters like Chun-Li and Dante, first impressions are lasting. Even with a few facial tweaks, there are still some members of the cast whose appearances put a bit of a damper (Spencer, Frank West) on the hype players want to have for them.

The franchise's movement to a more realistic art style in MvCI seems to have landed at a somewhat awkward spot on the cartoon/realistic timeline, and this seems to have affected the more human looking characters most.

By no means does this apply to the entire cast, as plenty of the combatants look just fine. Hulk, Zero, Jeddah and Rocket amongst others actually look pretty great. Capcom is releasing DLC characters to further flesh out the roster, and the latest batch's three newcomers may indicate some progress in this department.

Venom, Winter Soldier and Black Widow were shown on the 21st, and a closer look at their character models has us looking to the future of MvCI with some new hope for human faces.

Here are some high definition images of Black Widow, Chris Redfield, Winter Soldier, Spencer and Frank West for comparison's sake. Note how the faces of Widow and Soldier have a more smooth and properly lit presentation than the more gritty ones on Chris, Frank and Spencer:

Venom may be one of the game's best looking characters thus far, but seeing as we don't get to see Eddie Brock's actual face, he naturally avoids that "human face" issue people have been having.

The newcomers haven't been received without some criticism, however. Winter Soldier has been accused of looking a bit too much like Spencer, Black Widow of being disproportionately thin and Venom of having a distractingly out of place voice.

That said, they do seem to represent a positive step in fixing a component of Infinite that has been distracting fans since its earliest days.

What do you think about the new DLC fighters' faces as compared to the game's ugly ducklings? Has Capcom redirected their approach thus giving hope for a better looking MvCI in the future?

The next MvCI patch drops on December 5th, and Capcom's Battle for the Stones tournament will take place at Capcom Cup weekend, Dec 8-10. You can see the new DLC characters in action in their gameplay trailer here:
