Capcom Cup 2017 is drawing closer by the day, and a lot of top level players are ready to test their skills against eachother at the grand event.

In an effort to build hype for this, we've decided to reach out to the qualified Capcom Cup players, and will be bringing you interviews with as many as possible of the players set to participate in the event.

Next up is one of the most consistent players in Street Fighter 5 so far, GRPT|Haitani. In this interview, he talks about the brand new characters in Season 2, how to improve as a player in the game, chances at Capcom Cup 2017 and more.

Here's a snippet to get you started.

MajinTenshinhan: In Street Fighter 5, you're currently using Necalli. How strong do you think he is in the game right now? Are there any matchups in particular you feel are good or bad?

GRPT|Haitani: Necalli is a very well-balanced character and has even or better matchups with most of the cast, which makes him strong.

He might be a slight bit lower than the top tiers Ibuki, Akuma and Rashid, but he's still a upper tier character for sure.

As for particularly bad or good matchups, I think the character Necalli struggles with the most right now is Balrog (Boxer).

Continue below for the full interview.

MajinTenshinhan: We got 5 brand new characters in Season 2 of Street Fighter 5 - Kolin, Ed, Abigail, Menat and Zeku. What do you think about them?

GRPT|Haitani: I think each character brings brand new concepts with them.

Abigail, Menat and Zeku in particular are impressive in that they require more technical skills than other characters.

It makes me hopeful that we'll see more new characters and changes to the game which will keep allowing players to experience and enjoy it from many different angles.

MajinTenshinhan: What do you think is the most important thing to improve as a player in Street Fighter 5?

GRPT|Haitani: Learning your matchups.

Street Fighter 5 has no universal system like the Focus Attack and very few difficult combos, so what's important is to deepen your understanding of the compatibility between your character and your opponent's character, and what strategies are effective against them.

MajinTenshinhan: When you think of Necalli, you think of his powerful V-Trigger. It was announced that new V-Triggers would be added in Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition next year, but it's difficult to imagine anything rivaling his current one. What do you think would be a good 2nd V-Trigger for Necalli?

GRPT|Haitani: I think something that gets used right as you activate it would be good, similar to R. Mika's V-Trigger.

If he gets that, you'll be able to use his V-Skill to build your gauge, and then judge the situation moment by moment if you should go for a V-Trigger or use the gauge for a V-Reversal instead.

Necalli's V-Trigger is very powerful, but it also holds the weakness that once you've used it, V-Reversals become unavailable, leaving him vulnerable against opponent's pressure or chip finish Critical Arts.

MajinTenshinhan: Next January, Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition is coming out. What are you hoping to see in this new version?

GRPT|Haitani: It's important to increase what you're able to do, so I'm hopeful for the new V-Triggers.

However, right now in Street Fighter 5, V-Triggers are too comeback-focused, which gives a feeling that trading damage with pokes during the neutral game isn't seen as important.

I'll be happy if they balance it so that V-Triggers aren't too powerful.

MajinTenshinhan: What do you think about your chances at Capcom Cup 2017?

GRPT|Haitani: I will win.

Huge thanks to GRPT|Haitani for participating in our interview series and we wish you the best of luck at Capcom Cup 2017. Please look forward to more interviews in the coming days.
