'We fight as a team, Mikey' - how will Injustice 2's Ninja Turtles fight despite occupying a single character slot?

Shared health bar? Tag-ins? Assists?

The reveal of the Ninja Turtles in Injustice 2 was unexpected for many reasons. For one, we knew that there were only going to be three characters per Fighter Pack.

Despite this, one of the roster slots ended up being four fighters in one. All four of the Ninja Turtles together as a single combatant.

While we haven't seen any gameplay footage of the Ninja Turtles yet, there was a line spoken during the trailer that gives us a really good idea of what's going on here. Specifically, it's what Leonardo says to Michelangelo.

"Dibs on the magic lady," said Michelangelo. Interestingly, Leonardo responded with "we fight as a team, Mikey."

There was clear emphasis on this line of dialogue. It was as though it was said as a way of justifying why all four of the Ninja Turtles were present when there was only one slot remaining by that point.

So how will the team function as a single fighter on the roster? As of right now, we can only speculate on this question.

Ability to tag in?

It's highly likely that you'll be able to tag in partners while playing as the Ninja Turtles. For example, while using Leonardo as your point character, there will likely be a method or two to have Raphael fight in his stead.

We've seen this happen in a number of fighting games before. The Marvel vs. Capcom series is known for having players utilize multiple fighters as part of their team.

There's typically a tag action that is there simply to switch members. This often deals no damage.

With that said, there can also be a way to swap mid combo. While your point character starts a combo, another can finish it.

Back in Mortal Kombat 9 there was a mode in which both players controlled a team of two fighters. This has pretty much been forgotten about in later NRS games -- four players could even play together like this.

Perhaps we'll see its return in the form of this mechanic with the Ninja Turtles.

If you're playing a team then you expect them to work together in some fashion, right? This is often in the form of "assists."

Again, we'll reference Marvel vs. Capcom here. When another character jumps to assist, they are able to do so without occupying the actions on the one on point.

This means that the fighter you are controlling is still able to freely perform actions while a hitbox is being generated on screen. A great way to supplement zoning options and mix ups.

Then again, we also have another instance of this happening in Mortal Kombat 9. Assists worked a little differently while in the 2v2 mode.

While performing an assist attack that utilized your partner, your point character was unable to do anything themselves. The utility was obviously less than the assists we were used to.

Four turtles, one life bar?

Despite the fact that you'll be controlling the four turtles, it's probable that there will only be one health bar. If you never swap fighters and only use Leonardo, then you'll likely miss out on using the other three.

Maybe you remember a fighter that went by the name of "Noob-Smoke" in Mortal Kombat Deception. This team was made up of two fighters despite the fact that everyone else fought by themselves.

Noob Saibot and (Cyborg) Smoke teamed up as a single character. They shared one health bar rather than having them separated.

Or separate health bars?

If you've played Killer Instinct, then you might be aware of a fighter known as Aria. While everyone else had two health bars total, Aria had three.

A single bar for Aria was about 66% of any other's life bar. This totaled to be about the same amount of the resource.

In Injustice 2, characters have one bar for each of the two rounds. Being that there are four turtles, these health bars could be split in health in order to accommodate.

The issue with this is that it could potentially make the wager system less rewarding for the Ninja Turtles. You have less time to initiate the wager before one of the health bars is depleted.

Like Triborg? Ice Climbers? Other (unlikely) possibilities

Could it be that the Ninja Turtles fnction like Triborg in Mortal Kombat X? I find this scenario to actually be unlikely.

Remember what Leonard said to Mikey when he called dibs on fighting against Enchantress. They fight as a team...

If you only pick one of the Ninja Turtles at the select screen, then how exactly are they working together if the other three are just watching? That isn't what "fighting as a team" is all about.

Meanwhile, I also consider the Ice Climbers scenario to be unlikely too. This would have all four of the turtles on screen at the same time, essentially bum rushing the opponent.

This just doesn't sound good for gameplay reasons. It also probably has technical limitations as you have to account for mirror matches too...

How do you speculate the Ninja Turtles will play in Injustice 2? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comment section.

In the meantime, here's another look at the trailer:
