Immaculate spacing, inescapable Critical Art set ups, and lots of hair combing: Daigo's Guile is back and he means business

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • March 20, 2017 at 11:29 a.m. PDT

After Final Round 20 earlier this month, BST|Daigo told a handful of players at the event that he was dropping Ryu to play Guile in Street Fighter 5 Season 2. It looks as though he has stayed true to his word and is already putting in work online.

Thanks to WuahWuahMan, we have two FT10 sets featuring Daigo's Guile versus Mago's Karin and Moke's Rashid.

From what we're seeing, Daigo's choice to return to Guile is looking promising. Below are just a couple of quick clips from the sets to give you an idea of what to expect.

Good guile zoning is hard for rashid.

CrimsonCross said on March 20, 2017 at 12:18 p.m.

Does he really not have fun playing Guile? It fits his "typical" playstyle of zoning and switching up offense and defense that Daigo usually does.

But then again Nuckledu, Dieminion, and ISDD has said Guile is pretty boring most of the time so I guess there's some water to it.

WOW! Daigo 10-2 Mago. Mago finished second in topanga league.

For people who think that character tiers don't matter. Welcome to the real world :).

I could be wrong, but I doubt Daigo ever said he doesn't have fun playing Guile. He just identifies with Ryu more, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like Guile. There are 24 characters to pick from, so it would be silly to think he considers 23/24 characters to be boring. He obviously likes Guile to a certain degree.

Do you have links to Du, ISDD, and Dieminion saying Guile is boring? Maybe they did say that, but I haven't heard it.

There's different kinds of fun.
Winning is fun, but some people like to work for it because if it comes free it's not fun.

It makes him "unhappy" since it reminds him of work and not fun according to the translated article. I didn't mean to imply he thinks an entire roster is mostly boring, just he doesn't like playing Guile despite that he fits more of his mold of playstyle in SFV.

The Bornfree interviews with Du and Dieminion have them stating that they think Guile is boring to a degree and for ISDD I think I remember seeing him stating on a Twitch stream or clip that he says Guile gets boring after a while.

daigo would have been up near the top of topanga if he went guile instead of sticking with ryu. Ryu isnt tourney viable anymore, and probably wont be after the light kick buff.

TheTHCGamer said on March 20, 2017 at 1:18 p.m.

This doesn't automatically mean Daigos results will improve or be worse. There's already a good handful of Guile players that already have a good head start on Daigo.

Thst being said Daigo is an incredible player so who knows how fast he'll end up leveling up his Guile. Lets give it some time though and not assume things based on his results at the next few tournaments.

Who knows maybe he'll end up having one of the best guiles or maybe he will never be able to catch up to the current top guile players. One thing for sure is this will be an interesting change and I'll personally be keeping an eye out to see if it makes a dramatic change in his tournament results over time.

#18
Xykes said on March 20, 2017 at 1:19 p.m.

Daigo dropped Ryu in USF4, too.

Ryu in 3S wasn't exactly top tier, either.

Just because he's the "face of SF", doesn't mean he's always among the top tier.

Also, there was a Ryu in top 32 at Final Round last week. Viable enough.

#21
TheTHCGamer said on March 20, 2017 at 1:21 p.m.

We shouldn't assume just because he's Daigo that all his results would've been different if he just chose another character. Either way I do hope his results do improve because im sure he feels pressure to do so.

Lastly I know Ryu isn't the best character in SFV but why are some of us acting like SFV Ryu is the weakest character ever in a fighting game? I want Ryu to be tourney viable but should he automatically be top tier just because players like Daigo use him?

Also if that was the case people would just complain about the increase of shoto players online.

#22
Xykes said on March 20, 2017 at 1:23 p.m.

Another Ryu player did better than Daigo at Final Round.

And, even last year when Ryu was really strong, Diago wasn't exactly bodying everyone in sight. Other Ryus like Tokido did way better than he did.

Maybe the issue isn't JUST Ryu.

Kavey said on March 20, 2017 at 1:24 p.m.

Look what they've done to Ryu... The spectacle is saddening.

It's like Nuki playing Dhalsim to win out of nochoiceism.

evo546 said on March 20, 2017 at 1:24 p.m.

Honestly if he stick with guile he couldve won TOpanga. U should watch how he bodied Nemo when he was playing guile....

#25
TheTHCGamer said on March 20, 2017 at 1:28 p.m.

So that automatically means he would've win topanga? I guess.

#26
dlmaniac said on March 20, 2017 at 1:33 p.m.

Guile is borderline broken. That 2-bar VT allows him to throw those sonic breaks and get off corner pressure twice in a round. Even if it does not connect it still pushes opponents away. The startup on fireball and overhead kick is fast enough that it's almost impossible to get in on him unless you have some kinda command dash. Then his normals have a lot damage. Guile simply gets to turtle you for free.

#27
evo546 said on March 20, 2017 at 1:33 p.m.

I said he could have...... If he stick with guile from the beginning of s2 instead losing 0-7 with RYU

#28
dlmaniac said on March 20, 2017 at 1:37 p.m.

Prior to his Ryu-run, I saw Daigo beating Nemo's Urien online with Guile pretty comfortably. If he had used Guile in Topanga he woulda done much better than 0-7 finish.

#29
evo546 said on March 20, 2017 at 1:39 p.m.

Yes, i watch all his s2 guile video and he pretty much bodied all the top players online with guile. And you know Daigo never go 0-7 ever in topanga before lol

#30
Existent said on March 20, 2017 at 1:39 p.m.

That's almost exactly what he said. He said that it felt like work to win with Guile and that Ryu was more fun.

#31
TheTHCGamer said on March 20, 2017 at 1:46 p.m.

I don't think he even could've personally. I think we put too much pressure and emphasis on how good certain players are sometimes. Daigo was also struggling to put up Daigo like results in season 1.

The last sentence puts things in perspective though were only 1 full season in and and maybe we need to learn to be more patient. Were now in the age of patch this patch that because my character sucks.

Even top players are whining and complaining at an all time high hoping developers will buff there mains or nerf top characters. It's crazy because that's pretty much all people talk about when it comes to SFV anymore.

These character are too weak or these character are too strong. Only buff the weak characters and keep the strong characters the same is the funniest one I read a lot of lately.

I'm so glad that the people saying the last argument arent in charge of balancing fightimg games. We need to be a bit more patient in my opinion regarding characters and player results.

#32
GiBGUN said on March 20, 2017 at 1:49 p.m.

I'm sure he also said something about being aware that his fans saw him as synonymous with Ryu too. I sort of read into that as him perhaps feeling an obligation to play with Ryu, even when he wasn't enjoying doing so.

If that is the case, I'm glad he's decided to just do what he wants - I can't imagine playing with a character you're not into can be too much of a psychological benefit.

JamesThePowerhead said on March 20, 2017 at 2:07 p.m.

I'll say this forever. Tiers aside, in this game Guile fits Daigo's style a lot more. Im a Ryu fan boy, so this is sad to a degree, but still better than seeing Daigo so "uncomfortable"

#34
Jonay said on March 20, 2017 at 2:23 p.m.

This was Jiyuana's translation of what Daigo said:
"'I have to win. If I don't win, my sponsors are going to leave me,"' Jiyuna said quoting Daigo. "Even though he was doing all that and winning with Guile, he felt like, 'wait... when did playing fighting games become work? Playing fighting games is something I love. They're supposed to be fun. I shouldn't be doing something for the sake of winning, for the sake of my sponsors.'"

Daigo never says "Guile is boring." He is just saying he gets the most personal satisfaction from playing Ryu, and ideally he wants to play fighting games for personal satisfaction, not results. Like I said above, he could pick 23 other characters if he feels Ryu is not viable, and he picked Guile. Obviously he likes Guile.

NuckleDu never said "Guile is boring". He said "they took away some of his cool combos from S1", and that he's "not as much fun". Not as much fun does not equate to being boring. He obviously still enjoys the character, but maybe not as much as the S1 version.

Dieminion also never uses the word "boring". He said Guile's ground normals are worse than in SF4, and it's harder to establish Guile's zoning. He said he "doesn't want to play Guile", but FANG is not viable. Again, same as Daigo, if his main is not viable he has 23 other characters to pick from. He obviously likes Guile.

You're really twisting their words. Nobody ever says "boring".

Ryu is not viable for consistent tourney success in the cpt.

Will ryus occasionally make a showing? Perhaps. But they are working at a handicap compared to other characters tools.

A non-professional player should play whomever they want because the overwhelming majority will be pot monsters regardless. But a professional should consider if their pick is both a good fit for them as a player, along with being well suited to fight top tiers. Ryu needs buffs to compete, and probably more than just standing short.

Guile isn't exactly a stretch for daigo anyway. He played guile in ST and Super4. Hell, the sf5 version of guile is probably better for daigo than other iterations considering daigo is an aggressive player, and guile can be played more aggressively than usual in this game.

I'm not twisting words, boring is a summation of what they said.

I don't think Guile is boring myself but you can attest that they said that things about Guile aren't as much fun. The opposite of fun is boring. I didn't say that they always think he is always boring but he's not as much fun as other characters.

Guile is still strong, and a viable character. Is him being boring the end of the world if some parts of him are not fun to do like constant turtling or taking advantage of his current standing heavy kick? It's just semantics on your end.
