'I think the patch notes were a good start... I would say about 20% of [my list] was met' - LPN on the patch notes

Continuing on with getting the opinions of top Street Fighter 5 players, I decided to reach out to Long 'LPN' Nguyen on his impressions of the upcoming patch.

LPN is a professional player that is experienced with Birdie, Alex, and Urien. As a result, I've asked him questions pertaining to his opinions regarding all three of these characters.
AdaptiveTrigger: As of right now for Season 2, where do you think Birdie falls on the tier list? What are his match ups like?

LPN: As of right now for Season 2, Birdie in my opinion is still hovering around mid tier. He didn’t get enough changes as an individual character through buffs or nerfs to move him higher or lower on the tier list.

They adjusted his EX bull horn to essentially be safer on block and added some more combo potential, but it didn’t really help him in the areas he needed.

Although some of the other characters have gotten weaker due to their nerfs, such as Shoto invincible DPs being altered.

It gives Birdie more of an advantage than before because he can maintain pressure without being interrupted.

In short, he still is a good character but not great (yet). Tournament viable indeed but he will run into certain match ups where he will, unfortunately, lose.

AdaptiveTrigger: As of right now for Season 2, where do you think Alex falls on the tier list? What are his match ups like?

LPN: Alex is my boy and I loved everything about him in Season 1. For some reason, for Season 2, he got nerfed for some reason and buffed in the wrong areas.

I’m still a bit confused but I sort of understand the direction that Capcom wanted to go with him in this experimental phase.

Unfortunately, just like for Birdie, his nerfs and buffs did not make him any better or necessarily worse as a character while other characters got better which made it more challenging for Alex to compete.

He is a solid mid tier character that is currently being restricted from moving up in the ranks, in my opinion. He doesn’t really have 'winning' match ups but they are for the most part winnable.

Overcoming adversity is the name of the game for him now, ha ha.

AdaptiveTrigger: As of right now for Season 2, where do you think Urien falls on the tier list? What are his match ups like?

LPN: Urien is easily in the top 8 category of the tiers for how easy it is to 'play' him but winning with him is a different story.

He most definitely has the most freedom in the game of any character and has untapped potential with his versatile moveset.

He doesn’t have many bad match ups in all honesty. He has some extremely good ones, some that are a bit in his advantage, and some even ones.

Due to the buffs from Season 1 to Season 2, he is very strong right out of the gate but no where close to broken or busted as many perceive.

AdaptiveTrigger: In the recent patch notes, it was noted that Birdie's neutral is weaker in Season 2 than it was in Season 1. The changes made to Birdie in this upcoming patch is supposed to allow Birdie to compete in the neutral a bit better.

Do you think this goal was met with the changes?

LPN: The changes for the upcoming patch is turning him into Birdie 1.5. A mixture of Season 1 and Season 2 tools and most importantly, EX Zonk move has armor on frame 1 again!

He didn't have a 3 frame normal before or an invincible special move, but at least now he has an armored move once again. It will have to substitute for his lack of a 3 frame and invincible move.

AdaptiveTrigger: What do you think of Alex's changes?

Alex Valle mentioned on Twitter that Alex might be “gdlk” (godlike) now. Do you see this kind of potential in Alex’s changes?

LPN: Alex can have godlike looking combos, but he is nowhere close to being amongst the elite in the game right now. He might have some returning traits and attributes from Season 1, but he is still not complete.

I feel that Alex should get the same treatment for his EX elbow as Birdie's EX Zonk on frame 1. This is because he also doesn’t have a 3 frame normal or invincible special move, which are very important in this game.

Once he has at least one of those two, I can guarantee you that he will be a force to be reckoned with.

AdaptiveTrigger: What do you think about Urien’s changes? Are these fair nerfs? Were they enough?

LPN: Urien’s changes are fair and expected. I have nothing against it and I am glad that it is happening because people will still lose in the same way regardless.

People are afraid of his 'dumb' stuff but what they should be afraid of is his potential and endless growth as a character.

AdaptiveTrigger: With all three of your characters getting changed in one direction or another, which character do you currently have your eye on for maining after the next patch?

LPN: Would it be crazy to say I will play all 3? ; )

AdaptiveTrigger: What is your general reaction to the patch notes? Do you think enough was done and the right changes were made?

LPN: I think the patch notes that were recently released was a good start. I sincerely feel that there is more to come.

AdaptiveTrigger: How do you think the balance of the game will shape up compared to how it is currently?

LPN: The upcoming balance changes will affect the games meta for certain match ups but as a whole game, it isn’t enough to sway my decision in the current tier list.

AdaptiveTrigger: What is the change you are most happy to see?

LPN: The happiest change I liked is for the Shotos to get their Shoryuken back, kind of. Ha ha.

People can stop complaining and start using it again. Besides that, nothing was really interesting for me.

AdaptiveTrigger: Are there any changes that you find particularly puzzling?

LPN: Zangief and Cammy got buffed. Also, Laura and Balrog were not nerfed.

AdaptiveTrigger: What tier shifts are you expecting to see once the patch launches?

LPN: Low tier and mid tier are gonna mesh much better now. As for high tier, it will still maintain its order.

AdaptiveTrigger: How did the patch notes match up with your expectations?

LPN: I had my own list of suggested notes for the upcoming patch and I would say about 20% of it was met.

I expected nerfs for characters such as Balrog, Urien, Necalli, Cammy, Laura, Guile, etc. More buffs for Alex, Birdie, Ryu, Nash, etc.

Obviously lag input is still an issue that hasn't been addressed yet. Changes on hit box and hurt box intersections for several characters.

AdaptiveTrigger: What are your goals for 2017?

LPN: Qualify for Capcom pro Tour. Travel the world for more competition and introduce the world to the potential of fighting games!

AdaptiveTrigger: Where can our readers find more of you? Any shout outs you’d like to make?

LPN: I stream here and there on Twitch if you guys ever want to chat it up with me twitch.tv/LPNgaming.

I’m pretty active on Twitter so please follow me @circa_lpn for memes, foods, and fighting game related posts. ^_^

A big special thanks to LPN for taking the time to speak with us on the subjects of Birdie, Alex, and Urien as well as the impacts of the patch notes for Street Fighter 5.
