Everything you need to know about how the jump back option select is changing in Street Fighter 5

Posted by John 'Velociraptor' Guerrero • March 20, 2017 at 7:06 p.m. PDT

As big of a stir as the jump back option select caused when it was first discovered around one year ago, not everyone in the Street Fighter 5 community seems to have full grasp of how it works.

In short, it's a coverall means of defending against meaty attacks, throws and shimmies with one input sequence, the type of thing SF5 developers have wanted to avoid since day one.

Though there was something of an adjustment attempt made last year, the tech is still widely at large in regular gameplay. That's likely changing come the end of April.

Vesper Arcade has produced a video detailing the specifics of the jump back OS, and explaining why it should, in theory, be removed with the coming game update.

I love Vesper videos, but its just not the same without the epic panning shot intro of all the sneakers on the floor.

Zephyrus said on March 20, 2017 at 7:20 p.m.

this is such a huge nerf to Nash... I get it that it's an universal OS, but any character with no reversal or invincible move should now fear grapplers even more.

Aluppoj said on March 20, 2017 at 7:28 p.m.

God those combo videos were sooooo helpful! 😂

I too really enjoy Vespers content. His sarcastic humor is just too hilarious "Man".

GiBGUN said on March 20, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

Haha same. He's nailed the tone for the type of content he produces.

One less defensive option, and the game is now slightly more offensive pressure based. Who goes ham the most wins

logitech2059 said on March 20, 2017 at 7:33 p.m.

The only thing i hate about this change is that grapplers are going to be extremely scary and they are already pretty scary as it is.

I think V-reversals should be completely throw invincible to help defend against meaty -> throw/cmd grab setups and command grabs should be crush countered on whiff.

the era of gief

omgitsjulian said on March 20, 2017 at 7:49 p.m.

I'm very happy about Capcom attempting to remove option selects. As a casual player and spectator, there was never anything appealing about watching people perform them or trying to learn them myself.

RafaelBUrena said on March 20, 2017 at 7:49 p.m.

You guys are acting like this OS actually got you out of the EX SPD blender...

Gellus said on March 20, 2017 at 7:54 p.m.

I'm glad this is gone, buffer option selects are fine, this type of option selects is boring

Gellus said on March 20, 2017 at 8 p.m.

It is overall better for the game and Charlie needs actual buffs to be good

Xar5000 said on March 20, 2017 at 8:13 p.m.

I'm guilty in abusing it to get out of tough situation but at the same time, I'm glad there gonna be gone. It should have been patched out long ago.

celeon said on March 20, 2017 at 8:32 p.m.

you cannot thow scissor and paper at the same time anymore.

grass said on March 20, 2017 at 9:27 p.m.

who exactly loses to gief?i'm sorry but i don't know

Aleksan said on March 20, 2017 at 11:45 p.m.

You say this because you have no idea what an option select really is/was. You are as clueless as combofiend.

EraserRain said on March 21, 2017 at 1:08 a.m.

Couldn't you still block meaty attacks and tech the throw still? You only lose the jump back.

Balrog1984 said on March 21, 2017 at 2:13 a.m.

That doesnt make sense at all. Glad this crap is gone.

Stiqman said on March 21, 2017 at 3:21 a.m.

how many of us even used this regularly? this is a nerf to the pros.

Zephyrus said on March 21, 2017 at 3:33 a.m.

As much as people here don't like hearing it, it was the one thing still keeping Nash viable.
Now that it's gone, you better play perfectly or you're done.

Zephyrus said on March 21, 2017 at 3:34 a.m.

*raises hand*

Started using it once season 2 started after watching bonchan's nash.

GensDisciple said on March 21, 2017 at 4:08 a.m.

Evolve... Pick a new character, someone of your experience should be able to learn a new character quickly. Or maybe your complaining is the true skill.

Captainbuttocks said on March 21, 2017 at 5:25 a.m.

Just run away together with nash, get married, find an island somewhere and become family men. Maybe adopt a native boy.

GensDisciple said on March 21, 2017 at 6:01 a.m.

Kapirotto said on March 21, 2017 at 6:28 a.m.

If I'm not mistaken EX Scythe will be throw invincible in next patch. Now you will have to go for the read.

Dacapn said on March 21, 2017 at 6:47 a.m.

Meanwhile the rest of us have had our brains on actually reading what our opponents are trying to do. It goes both ways. Grapplers', specifically Gief, main source of damage used to be command grabs and that OS rendered his entire mixup game useless so he became a big slow character with high health and dealt little damage. He had to play perfectly to win. Now his spds do less damage since he can do damage in combos. I know you want to believe that Nash is the only character with no wakeup option, but this coming from someone who went from season 1 necalli with glorious wakeup options to season 1 Gief who also has no wakeup options and a v reversal that has the range of a pixel. Figure it out.

RHayabusa said on March 21, 2017 at 7:31 a.m.

Great to see this go, SF should be about strategy, not rigging the system in their favour, albeit not against any rules though.

Xykes said on March 21, 2017 at 8:21 a.m.

You're acting like Nash doesn't benefit from this, too.

Everyone is hurt by this. Everyone benefits from it.

And, BTW, grapplers ARE characters without reversals of invincible moves. So, this nerf hits them, too.

Amoc said on March 21, 2017 at 8:21 a.m.

Glad this OS is going. It's lame watching it in pro play. However, I feel Capcom is making too many changes too often.

Imagine if the NFL or NBA changed their rules two or three times every season.

soulspark said on March 21, 2017 at 8:36 a.m.

Mindblown. I didn't know about this at all

semantik said on March 21, 2017 at 8:36 a.m.

There seems to be a lot of confusion in this article.

You guys realize that the OS is not going away right? It's just harder and you have to perform it slightly differently.

If you really understand the game mechanics, you should know that this OS is almost impossible to remove without breaking another part of the game.

sobrouesselogin said on March 21, 2017 at 8:47 a.m.

This won't remove the OS at all. You will just need to stop pressing up before you press the tech throw.

thisRalf said on March 21, 2017 at 9:17 a.m.

Bad comparison.

This isn't designed behavior. They were never supposed to have option selects in this fashion. If the NFL/NBA players did something like this, it would be an instant penalty every time.

In the SF5, there is no penalty for doing this, it just works, despite the fact the designers never intended for their players to do this. So its removal is better for the game as a whole.

GensDisciple said on March 21, 2017 at 9:17 a.m.

So what are they adding more jump frames?

Gellus said on March 21, 2017 at 9:26 a.m.

Wow, this is a sh*t thing to say, nobody should have to pick another character

Zephyrus said on March 21, 2017 at 9:33 a.m.

said by someone with a half naked picture of a grown man. I wish you could visually see me barf with absolute repulsion

Amoc said on March 21, 2017 at 9:34 a.m.

I think the comparison is fine. Capcom pushes too many balance updates out for a game that has a pro tour.

I understand what you're saying about the OS being unintended, but there are a lot of other changes than just this OS.

For example, SRK properties are changing again in April. This is like if the NFL decided pass interference made offenses too OP and took the rule away in week 4 but then realized thay they needed some form of the rule so in week 10 they brought PI back but only for passes 20 or more yards.

For a game that is clearly being built around their pro tour, I think it puts the pro players in a hard spot.

Zephyrus said on March 21, 2017 at 9:36 a.m.

he really doesn't...

What's he going to do? Combo off his overhead? Hit you with his amazing shimmies? Apply his spectacular throw loop?

Zephyrus said on March 21, 2017 at 9:40 a.m.

My true skill can't be shown on an online forum where everyone is behind a pc and anonymous.

I shouldn't have to pick a new character. I like Nash. I like Alex. They're by far the two I use the most and the ones I like using the most. Thankfully I'm a lucky guy who saw them both being buffed to top 2 with the season 2 patch and saw them getting the things they needed to be god tier with the season 2.5 patch.

In all seriousness, atleast my favorite character wasn't killed in a story mode and won't be in this game.

Btw love the hypocrasy.

Horrow said on March 21, 2017 at 9:44 a.m.

I'm glad stuff like this is getting the boot.

Boiled down, Option Selects like this is having the game play for you. Which in my opinion, is a huge no no.

Zephyrus said on March 21, 2017 at 9:53 a.m.

As for your vomit... I mean argument, Gief atleast has a v-skill that lets him armor moves and punish stuff that normally can't be punished.
Necalli still has an invincible reversal with ex dp and an invincible anti-air with mp dp.

Nash doesn't. Nash does not have defensive tools. His v-reversal is useless and by far the worst one in the game. It can be punished with a grab on reaction by the entire cast. On reaction. Not with a read. Reaction. His v-trigger is SH*T. It was nerfed too hard. Lost the invincibility it had and is slower. It's only good to continue combos, which EVERYONE'S v-trigger already lets them do.

Someone also mentioned that ex scythe is grab invincible. Oof, I need to spend meter for something Necalli, Juri, Guile, Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Ibuki, Cammy and Urien can do for free. They need to nerf Nash again. Ex scythe is really Op.

Hopefully Bonchan can also figure out how to deal with pressure. That video above is a prime example on why Nash is bottom 5 and why he'll be bottom 1 after this patch.

Zephyrus said on March 21, 2017 at 9:59 a.m.

Also, good job on figuring out why Vesper had Nash in the thumbnail of the video despite Nash not being featured in it. Adapt, right?

ijuka said on March 21, 2017 at 10:54 a.m.

uh I used it Every Single Time I was trying to tech, when I wasn't cornered. Why would you NOT use it?

ijuka said on March 21, 2017 at 10:57 a.m.

Because screw having defensive options. Shimmys and yolo jump ins all day, am I right?

thisRalf said on March 21, 2017 at 11:17 a.m.

Too many implies in balance changes, there are multiple. There has been one at S2, and one minor one that has not been implemented yet.

In regards to my argument, you pulled a logical fallacy called a red herring. We were discussing option selects, not the shoryuken changes. The option select was the thing you needed to refute, you can't refute the changes of the option select by bringing up other changes that are changes to the game as a whole.

My point still stands. OS were not supposed to be in the game as such are against the rules. In professional sports, you break the rules, you get a penalty. In video games, if a bug breaks the rules or actions work not as intended, there is no penalty, you just reap the benefits. The only way to stop that is to fix the bug.

There is a big difference between fixing something that not working as designed, and changing the rules of a move (aka the shoryuken changes). If you want to debate that, there is no debate. Changing the properties of a move is exactly like your comparison to pass interference and you're 100% correct.

But in the case of OS, you aren't.

Horrow said on March 21, 2017 at 12:02 p.m.

Its called improving yourself. Stop relying on the game to do everything for you.

Captainbuttocks said on March 21, 2017 at 12:36 p.m.

Yeah its urien. I dont see your point? Lol

Captainbuttocks said on March 21, 2017 at 12:44 p.m.

I think you are the only one to btch and moan about your character on here. Thats all you do. So again i say, leave this cruel world behind, take nash and go somewhere to be alone, where no one can hurt you, and make sweet sweet love.

Even the fang users dont complain as much. Lmao

Zephyrus said on March 21, 2017 at 1:16 p.m.

Missed the chun-li mainers?
Or Ryu?
Or Alex?
Or Fang?

I complain because no one else does while characters that are better than him are meme'd to death. "Better nerf Fang".

I complain because ONCE again for the THIRD time, Nash got nerfed. And everyone here seems fine with it.

But oh noes someone, who barely did anything worthwhile during the entire capcom pro tour yet somehow had several Gods watching during capcom cup, went 0-7 at sxsw. Plenty of green comments supporting all the crocodile tears that chun mainers had.

I mention my character got nerfed and I get downvoted. Love the f*cking double standards.
Absolute retards who I very much wish I could cave their skulls in (and no, I'm not kidding), got my character nerfed because one f*cking guy abused the 8 frames of lag during and pre-evo.

Now I'm forced to play a character in a very gimmicky playstyle because everything else he had that was good, got nerfed. So I was forced to learn an OS to make up for the nerfs my character got in his defense AND THAT GETS NERFED AS WELL.

So, I'm very sorry if I'm not enjoying this situation.
I already have an immense disdain for people who actively try to harm my enjoyment out of anything (as proof by my behavior towards Eventhubs trolls). And these people keep actively harming my enjoyment.
I'm trying to inform people on this site, but one year here has shown me that the overwhelming majority of users here, have the mental capacity of a pebble. No need to be offended if you don't consider yourself stupid, but like ALWAYS someone will feel offended.

ijuka said on March 21, 2017 at 2:01 p.m.

It's a defensive option that I'm performing personally. You must think that jump back OS does not lose to anything, right? It loses to the crush counter setups that also beat delayed tech. The difference is that you don't get counter hit out of jump back OS.

Another way to think about this is that as the attacker, with no jump back OS you can just shimmy all day. There's never a need to do the more risky crush counter setups because there no more is jump back OS.

And jump back OS done frame perfect also does take SOME skill to perform. More that can be said about many things in this game.

This just favors the attacker. And you really have no idea what you're talking about if you think that the game's doing everything for me if I jump back OS. It's still not a very good option as it causes you to lose a lot of ground and still loses to the delayed tech counters. But at least as the defending player you have a fighting chance.

I'm not sure why you think that only offensive characters deserve to have success in SFV.

And I'm not sure why you think that less defensive options = good for the health of the game. This was the only crutch characters like Nash, Bison etc. could rely on.

CamracPls said on March 21, 2017 at 2:31 p.m.

I'd like every character in the game to be really strong too, but that's not the reality here. Capcom has made it clear that there's a war on space control, zoning and traditional street fighter going on. If you want to keep playing SFV, then pick someone else. If you just love fighting games, then pick another game.

I used to have sympathy for this sort of thing. I was a Hawk player in SF4. I said the same stuff. I'm "forced" to use this character. "I've put too much time in." Etc. Etc. Then one day, I woke up and I realized it was my own fault for losing at the character select screen. I like to win, and I can't stand losing to imbeciles. SFV rewards imbeciles, so I started playing the unfair characters. Now I'm winning my locals. All this to say, do yourself a favor and don't lose when it's still a choice.
