'[At] 10% [life] for both players, why would someone use thunder kick now? It’s a real gamble' - Julio on Ken's patch changes

Continuing on with getting the opinions of top Street Fighter 5 players, I decided to reach out to Julio Fuentes on his impressions of the upcoming patch, as well as how it affects Ken.

Ken is one of the characters that benefited from the changes to the invincible Dragon Punch attacks. On the other hand, Ken received a nerf to his thunder kick.

We find out where the Ken player believes the character to be on the tier list currently, and where he predicts Ken will end up after the patch actually hits in this interview.

Unfortunately, it seems we won't be able to see much of Julio this year due to a tendon injury he suffered.
AdaptiveTrigger: As of right now for Season 2, where do you think Ken falls on the tier list? What are his match ups like?

Julio: Since I haven't been too active, it's harder for me to answer this question. But I did talk to Momochi about where Ken falls recently and I agree with him; he’s hanging somewhere between 9th-10th.

AdaptiveTrigger: So the patch notes made Ken’s Dragon Punch attacks have more versatility (like most of the others) but it also made his thunder kick -4 down from -2 on block. How much of an impact do you think this is going to have on Ken’s gameplan?

Julio: This is a big impact! Ken players are going to be scared as hell to use this as a comeback tactic.

If the game comes down to 10% [life] for both players, why would someone use thunder kick now? It’s a real gamble.

It would only be worth using it as a meaty to make it safe, but that can still be difficult to land.

AdaptiveTrigger: In your opinion, is Ken a character that needed a nerf? What were you expecting to see from Ken’s changes before the patch notes came out?

Julio: I was expecting deep-anti air dragon punches to return and I'm glad they did. Besides that, the only thing i would have really wanted was the 4 frame back strong.

It made Ken’s close up game a real threat; the back strong being 4 frames gave us more chances to beat people defending themselves with 3 framers.

Now it’s a 5 frame move. It's sad now.

AdaptiveTrigger: Any predictions on where Ken will end up on the tier list once the patch hits?

Julio: Definitely 10th, in my opinion.

AdaptiveTrigger: Do you currently plan on still maining Ken after the patch hits?

Julio: Absolutely! Unless Yun comes out, I don't see myself switching characters ever.

AdaptiveTrigger: What is your general reaction to the patch notes? Do you think enough was done and the right changes were made?

Julio: I was pretty accepting of all the changes except for Cammy’s - why is she getting stronger?? But yeah I feel they addressed the key areas people were complaining about.

I'm kind of sad to see up back throw tech disappearing though. I really abused that technique.

AdaptiveTrigger: How do you think the balance of the game will shape up compared to how it is currently?

Julio: Hard to say, I haven't been able to play much because of my injury.

AdaptiveTrigger: What is the change you are most happy to see?

Julio: Personally, I am kind of glad that they gave fierce Shoryuken invincibility starting from the 3rd frame. I'll definitely be using anti-air fierce DP whenever possible and I really believe there’s a lot of angles to use it in.

AdaptiveTrigger: Are there any changes that you find particularly puzzling?

Julio: Just Cammy getting stronger is puzzling.

AdaptiveTrigger: How did the patch notes match up with your expectations, overall?

Julio: It's hard to say because Capcom threw a curve ball and literally gave characters new moves, as well as giving characters buffs/nerfs that nobody expected.

Just gotta wait and see how this unfolds…

AdaptiveTrigger: What are your goals for 2017?

Julio: To let my tendon injury heal and be able to compete in 2018. You won’t be seeing me in CPT this year. :(

AdaptiveTrigger: Where can our readers find more of you? Any shout outs you’d like to make?

Julio: Shout outs to my team Echo fox of course for taking care of me! Follow my Twitter for updates, @juliofuentes408, or my Facebook page, facebook.com/FOX.JulioFuentes!
A big special thanks to Julio Fuentes for taking the time to speak with us on the subjects of Ken in Street Fighter 5 and the patch notes.
