Daigo learns UmvC3 from one of the world's best players - watch as Justin Wong teaches The Beast for the Iron Fist Netflix premiere

Posted by Justin 'AdaptiveTrigger' Gordon • March 17, 2017 at 11:59 a.m. PDT

So this is probably the first time that most of the general public has seen Daigo Umehara play a game within the Marvel vs. Capcom series.

His opponent to get warmed up? Justin Wong, one of the greatest players to have touched the series.

Both players are playing as Iron Fist since the event is being presented by the upcoming Iron Fist Netflix show.

It's worth keeping in mind that Daigo is essentially learning the game from Justin Wong so this segment probably shouldn't be taken too seriously. Still, Justin Wong is able to show off his knowledge of Iron Fist combos.

Didn't Daigo play a Wolverine team in tournament? Maybe I'm crazy.

Umm.. Daigo played MvC3 since before Ultimate. He even participated in the title at EVO 2011. Wouldn't say he was top 8 material, but he's familiar enough with the game based on videos you can find on YouTube.

Why are people saying he never played before? I read in many Youtube videos as well, is this just a lie to justify him get beat by JWong that spread for no reason?

Justin Iron Fist is sick as f*ck tho, why didn't he stick with the char is beyond me

Think he made top 8 at NCR.

Yeah, I specifically remember him quitting Marvel to focus only on SF4. If we're right, this is the second time in a short while we've had some weird journalism on Eventhubs.

:P if you want to be super technical. You can say that he didn't play UMVC3, but played MVC3 :D

ijuka said on March 17, 2017 at 12:24 p.m.

??? Daigo has played MVC3 and you can find this out with 5 seconds of youtube searching.

This is like saying a player who played AE 2012 is new to the game and learning to play it for the first time when they play their first game in Ultra!

MF_Shroom said on March 17, 2017 at 12:25 p.m.

I think hes never played UMVC3... NOT MVC3

doesn't he have the only launcher that has to connect when the opponent is on the ground?

Daigo played Marvel...

AngriestAngryArtist said on March 17, 2017 at 1:02 p.m.

Well...yes? Ultra had W ultra and red parry so it's new. And Omega mode :P

Story has already been updated to remove the parts that said this is the first time that Daigo has played a Marvel vs. Capcom game.

Still, after watching the video you'll see that Justin Wong is teaching Daigo some fundamentals of the game.

I remember him playing it he had a crazy unique approach where he would pop Xfactor early to kill the point character as opposed to saving it for ultra cheap anchor. It was a fresh take In an already established meta.

I hope to see stories of Daigo beating Justin in Marvel Infinite in the future.

Have them start on the same playing field :)

That would certainly be a story worth telling.

I think what makes it so weird that EH says this is the first time anyone's seen daigo play umvc3 is the fact that it was EH that originally broke the news all those years back that Daigo was going to attempt to get good at the game.

There was definitely a period in time where EH would constantly post videos of daigo playing marvel lol.

It's nice to see Daigo having fun. I love hearing the "ohhh" when he learns something new.

airbagtelex said on March 17, 2017 at 2:21 p.m.

calm down. he never played ultimate before, he played Vanilla years ago. He also never played iron fist and forgot how to play.

Abbadon36 said on March 17, 2017 at 2:49 p.m.

Iron Fist just wasn't a strong character in the game.
His role could be done by others in the cast and better.
His fun as F in casuals but Wong is trying to win so that A game needs get brought!

punisher made iron fist work and it was crazy entertaining to watch before he swapped em out

cuz he's wolverine, storm, akuma team was better for his play style.
which he won EVO with

Gellus said on March 17, 2017 at 3:38 p.m.

So is Phoenix Wright, yet I<3Justice is doing work with him every time

"Oh but he's trying to win"

I<3Justice won against big names like Fchamp or Cloud that have teams formed with top tiers with his team

#29
Yawdan said on March 17, 2017 at 3:56 p.m.

Iron Fist is low tier re: not viable. Whereas KBR, RyanLV and iHeartJustice have found competitive, or even top tier teams for supposedly low tier characters, the best Iron Fist teams wouldn't make top 8.

So cringe to watch

#32
Bird_LaoX said on March 17, 2017 at 7:37 p.m.

If you watched the video you would know that they acknowledge he played vanilla marvel 3 but never touched umvc3, he couldn't even find his mains chars. The comments are stupid, it shows people don't even analyze data before criticizing anything anymore.

Sad

AdaptiveTrigger said on March 17, 2017 at 7:52 p.m.

Honestly, I think the comments were more focused on how I structured the article before I edited it.

I think it was fair to point it out honestly... I learned something.

#34
Gellus said on March 17, 2017 at 7:57 p.m.

I still think some things should be changed, for example

"It's worth keeping in mind that Daigo is essentially learning the game from Justin Wong so this segment probably shouldn't be taken too seriously."

This is just wrong, yeah he may have never played Ultimate, but the changes were not so drastic to the point of him having to learn the game again, it's like saying someone that played Super SF4 having to learn the game again on Ultra, it doesn't make sense

#35
AdaptiveTrigger said on March 17, 2017 at 7:58 p.m.

I'm pretty sure it's been years since Daigo's touched the game. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Rahavic said on March 18, 2017 at 11:45 a.m.

That use of XF has and is still being used by everyone since the beginning of MVC3. It was being used for at least a year before Daigo ever even played the game in tournament. I'm so confused as to how you don't know this unless you're very very green to the game/scene in which case my bad.

Utils said on March 19, 2017 at 11:06 p.m.

Yes and they even go so far as to mention his Wolverine playing at the START of the stream!
