Even Ono isn't sure? Learn all about one of Capcom's most controversial figures as History Behind the Warrior takes a closer look at Poison

Posted by John 'Velociraptor' Guerrero • March 13, 2017 at 5:02 p.m. PDT

Well, here we go...

Poison is a fan favorite, consistently cosplayed and also one of the most controversial figures among the entire Street Fighter roster. Originally appearing in Final Fight as part of the Mad Gear Gang, Poison's transition from Japanese to American culture resulted in some rather interesting character changes.

Rarely will there be discussion about Poison without talk of her gender, and it seems her story changes depending on whether you're in Japan or America. It seems even Capcom's Yoshinori Ono has made contrasting statements about Poison's identity.

History Behind the Warrior has developed a video detailing the character's history both in and out of game story lines. Give it a watch to get the full picture on Poison.

She's a trans woman. There are several prominent trans woman players in the FGC now, you'd think this wouldn't be so hard for us to understand.

Whatever her birth sex, she would be legally considered a woman in both the US and Japan.

Personally I think it's very cool that the series has a transgender character, as it's a minority group very underrepresented in video games.

He gets it. Her "origin" is not just a transgender woman, it just ended up that way. Which makes her more appealing for some reason let's be real

Riigoo said on March 13, 2017 at 5:55 p.m.

Gyus, please. Akiman, the original character design of Poison and Final Fight game already said back then in "All About Capcom Head to Head Fighting Games" that Poison was originally planned to be cisgender female precisely to contrast that exaggeratedly masculine visual that beat and up games had. But during the development they decided change her to transsexual females, due to the suggestion that "hitting women was considered rude" in America. Also in Street Fighter X Tekken artbook, there's a footnote from him saying that he'll always personally view Poison as being cis female in Japan and only being transsexual overseas. For heaven's sake, it's on wiki. Even Ono himself already said that is best everyone think whatever leaves you most comfortable about it so why don't leave it like that?

But let's be clear, everyone knows that in fact, this polemic is intentional and never will be really settled because Capcom only win with polemics.

I think she's a really good character. I didn't get around to it until late but her and Hugos stories in sf4, while maybe not surprising, is still rather sweet. She also gets to be one more character that's fun to watch but I have no idea how yo use.
Side note. I thought Roxy was nothing but a palette swap but seems she's her own character too.

Vega players don't mind using a character that's gay so why should anyone be bothered by playing a trans character? Can't wait until they add her to SFV - she's going to break her boot off in this game.

#36
XxAngelChunLixX said on March 13, 2017 at 9:11 p.m.

#37
XxAngelChunLixX said on March 13, 2017 at 9:13 p.m.

Roxy is actually not trans. She was born a woman, grew up in the same orphanage as Poison and really looks up to her. Poison is the trans one.

#38
MatureVice said on March 13, 2017 at 9:27 p.m.

She's a woman either way.

#39
MatureVice said on March 13, 2017 at 9:29 p.m.

This is not actually true, though it's become a common story and it's entirely possible some of the creators have convinced themselves it's what happened by repeating the story over and over. But if you go back to the original concept art for Poison, the kanji for 'new-half' are right there beside her.

Capcom USA didn't allow Poison or Roxy regardless, and replaced them with new male enemies.

#40
Toomnyusernae said on March 13, 2017 at 9:29 p.m.

Id like to think the design was female to begin with but once it got onto paper it was labelled new-type .. . . new-half. Now everyone can interpret whatever gender she was to begin with?

#41
Eternal said on March 13, 2017 at 9:53 p.m.

All I know is that SFV is sorely lacking in Final Fight representation. If S2 is all "new" characters I hope one of them is Lucia or Haggar and maybe we get Damnd or maybe even a combo team of J and Two P. as one character.

Capcom's official stance has been, for a while, that she's trans outside of Japan and is a born woman in Japan.

For what it's worth, Akiman, who designed her, said he made her with the intention of her having been a woman from the very start, so she was never created with the intention of being transgender, though she is considered to be now.

Those are the actual details, and make of them what you will.

I mean, Birdie used to be white and isn't anymore. I don't see why Poison can't be considered trans now even if she wasn't at the start. It makes her character stand out twice as much. No one would care about her this much otherwise. It's for the best.

That could literally happen though people can actually darken or lighten their skin but Capcom has never said he was one race or another, in fact people could literally change their face.

It's not like Capcom Said Birdie was Caucasian then said he was African, they just implied he was a different color albeit for the stupidest reason of all time, but still...

Um, I may have misled you, I was just scrolling through random posts and comments to kill time before I started working. Please do not think I care about this subject at all. I actually do not care for Poison at all, and if I did I'd most def prefer her to be a full (cis?), I don't know, female(?) basically the average kind, you know what I mean. I am really not an adventurous person when it comes to things like that, I don't need diversity in my life that bad.

Actually I regret ever posting here, I'm probably gonna have the Chun-li/Kolin fan on my a$$ now and whatnot.

#64
XxAngelChunLixX said on March 14, 2017 at 7:40 a.m.

It happens every single time. She could be in the banner for an article that has nothing to do with her. Or she could be name dropped once as an example in an article that has nothing to do with her, and it begins every time. It's stupid.

People worship, murderers, bullies, perverts, sexists, and even rapists in video games, but the concept of having a trans woman is all of a sudden where they draw the line. They're so sensitive to the thought that their sad minds see yet another pair of pixelated breasts and they fantasize over them yet panic when they realize she was born a male, as if it matters. You're still turned on by this fictional character, I'd be focused on getting help for that rather than arguing her gender. Whether or not she tucks it, or is post-op, she identifies as a female. She is a female. And she's awesome. Period.

#69
MatureVice said on March 14, 2017 at 8:33 a.m.

Both the USA and Japan legally recognize trans women as women.

#70
MatureVice said on March 14, 2017 at 8:39 a.m.

Ono said to the contrary that he feels she's trans either way but he sees her as new-half (with male genitalia) in Japan and post-op abroad. Then he said everyone should decide for themselves. It's not so cut and dry. The art for Capcom Fighting All-Stars, for instance, colors male and female character profiles in red and blue and then colors Poison in purple. That was the Japanese development team.

Akiman's account is not consistent with the fact that Poison's initial concept art features the kanji for new-half.

Regardless, she's more interesting and unique with this element -- unique to fighting games, period -- and I don't see why people would want to get rid of it. The controversy has certainly made her more popular.

#71
el_Principe_de_Lety said on March 14, 2017 at 8:40 a.m.

Is this the safest route Capcom can take on the matter, by leaving it ambiguous? Could it harm Capcom's business and sales my making a character confirmed transgendered or homosexual?

So no one can know the truth? It's their truth, you're knowing what it is. They identify as a female or male so that's what is on their ID and that's what you're getting to know THAT'S the truth.

You said Capcom feared putting her in this game which is unfounded since she has been playable in 3 official Capcom 1 on 1 fighting titles.

Your reasoning made about as much sense as me calling you a cuck.

P.S. A cuck is also a spineless person, so you can use whatever definition you want it hardly makes sense that Capcom fears haviNG Poison in.

#82
Kenshiro said on March 14, 2017 at 1:57 p.m.

Aye they have. Ono still finds her problematic though. He named that as the reason why they didn't put her in SF4 earlier despite Ayano's wishes

Good that you realize that what you said made no sense.

A cuckold only means someone who lets his partner have sex with others. That hast nothing to do with wanting Poison in SFV. Neither does being scared and spineless as you described it...

#84
Kenshiro said on March 14, 2017 at 3:52 p.m.

I want to thank the academy and of course my parents and English teachers.

Uhmm what you're saying again makes very little sense. She was playable in one very obscure Capcom game before being reintroduced in SFxT. That's the first and only roster that the whole game received. If she was as popular as you're letting on and she didn't get in before the likes of many others, why would it be an issue if she's added later?

Their fears wouldn't have subsided that late into the SF4's life with them not expecting the game to garner more sales. So again you are speculating and not even being the least bit sensible about it.

As for the word cuck, it is synonymous with cowardice and having no spine. Unless of course you're going to tell me there's a great sense of pride in watching your significant other being dug out and then you being on clean up duty.

I can't wait to see what you'll pull from your anus next.

Meh. Cuckolding is a specific act. Including one single thing.

Still has nothing to do with wanting a character in a game unless you change the meaning of the word to just that.

Poison is popular enough but Ono is pulling himself to include her. Just like he did for 6 years during the last game. It's been known that Ayano was pushing for her inclusion since vanilla.

SFxT was the perfect game to introduce her. Since it had a much more silly approach

Now we're back with a new roster and Ono is in the front seat once more and he has gone on paper letting people know what his stance is on Poison.

Not too hard to draw a conclusion from that.
