Daigo dropping Ryu for Guile in Street Fighter 5 Season 2, according to top players at Final Round

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • March 13, 2017 at 12:11 p.m. PDT

Looks like BST|Daigo is dropping Ryu in Street Fighter 5 Season 2. After placing 33rd at Final Round 20 -- the Capcom Pro Tour's first premier event this year -- it seems as though Daigo has finally had enough.

A couple of top players spoke to Daigo at the tournament yesterday, and he confirmed to them that he will be playing Guile instead.

Ryan "SPY|Filipino Champ" Ramirez and Miky "WFX|XSK Samurai" Chea made note of it on Twitter, reporting that Daigo promised not to pick Ryu anymore and when that he has essentially "gave up."

Daigo's "give up" statement likely refers to a past broadcast of The BeastTV on which he explained that he did not want to simply pick a top tier character in order to win. He wanted to put in the work with the character he enjoys most in order to have fun with the game, so switching to Guile feels like "giving up" and taking the easier road to victory.

Unfortunately, it looks as though the nerfs Ryu underwent were too steep for Daigo's liking. Guile is currently considered one of the best characters in Street Fighter 5, and Daigo has not only been putting in work with the Sonic Boom-wielding warrior, but also has a history of playing the character in other Street Fighter games.

It will be interesting to see how this change affects Daigo's tournament results over the course of this year's Capcom Pro Tour.

If Daigo is serious about doing well in the CPT he has to in my opinion. I know Ryu is more fun but unfortunately he is a shell of his former season 1 glory. With the amount of money the CPT provides he has to be like many other pros that have to treat the game like a job.

Not ideal, but something he must adapt to.

There's serious amounts of money on the line this year for SFV, no room to be a low tier hero really so I respect his decision. Who knows maybe Ryu will get some good changes in the up coming patch.

He is also known for a strong Rog in super turbo.

It's interesting to see this after FR however. The results really showed that our early tier conceptions don't equal top 8 or even top 16 for some "broken characters". If you polled the EH audience on "what characters will you see in top 8 at FR" you would have seen 95% of the salty online vote go to Urien, Rog, and Laura. Of which we had 1 Laura and half of the participants using characters EH believe to be on the worse half of the roster......interesting stuff. Ryu is probably about to get buffed within the month too.

He actually never was a real Ryu main. Guile in ST, Akuma in alpha 3, Guile in cvs2 and Ken in 3rd strike. SF4 was probably the only game were he really mained ryu but even then he dropped him for Yun, Guile and then Evil Ryu. He still had a pocket ryu in Ultra but he did not use him that much

#18

Guile is the second most "Daigo character" in this game, so I still enjoy this choice. But I get that he wanted to make Ryu work as it is his favourite character.

#20
CityHunter said on March 13, 2017 at 12:36 p.m.

Why are people acting like this is dramatic. Its not the first SF game he does that. In fact Daigo plays top tier in most game.

#21
Pachendrix said on March 13, 2017 at 12:36 p.m.

It's sad to see legends forced to drop the characters they love purely because of balancing issues. Now both him and Infiltration are on the same boat in character crisis hell. Even Xian was forced to change to Ibuki. And Snake Eyez almost drops Gief at one point in season 1. Now this is starting to become a true ESport game where top players are forced to play tiers rather than play their preferred characters in order to make some money. But then again, maybe that's the idea all along.....

With that said though, we all saw what happened before when Daigo switched to a top tier (AE Yun), and it didn't end well. Although it did gave birth to a pretty hilarious Hitler rant meme video, so it wasn't all bad.

Daigo is the original Guile anyways. He was known as a Guile turtler as a little kid.

In ST he played fei, bison (dictator), guile, sagat, ryu, and rog (boxer) at really high level.

In USF4: his pocket character that he practiced the most was not ryu (i mean i am sure he was still awesome with him), it was Ken. Would have been nice if he used Ken in some exhibition matches.

Let's also not forget, Daigo didn't choose Yun because Yun was strong. He said he was going to use him before Arcade Edition was even released; it just turned out that Yun ended up being the strongest character.

He also tried to main Hugo in USF4, but ultimately the character had too many bad matchups.

Aw! I never speak about things I don't know a lot about. It's still kinda like, yeah he's gotta do what he's gotta but at the same time, watching a player leave the one they want to use for work is kind of a bummer. I'd say that even if I didn't like the character. Already thought that about people leaving characters like Mika in season 2.

It's funny that Japanese top player, and I think Kazunoko himself, all said that Daigo's Ken was amazing, and that he switched to Ken against Kazunoko in CCup he would've destroyed him. Ultimately, Daigo's pride won and he stuck with E.Ryu.

Seriously. I know Daigo loves Ryu but using him also felt like some kind of protest to force Capcom to tune him back up. Daigo's placement at Topanga and then FR pretty much proves Ryu has flatlined. The point is also strengthened by Xian switching out of Fang to Ibuki and winning FR. Sometimes you gotta change your character. Ibuki is a sh*t ton of fun to watch too!

Chun Li and Ryu both had only two reps in top 33.

With Daigo and Ricky both finishing 33rd.

After the S2 balance patch Chun Li has dropped a full -14 places in term of online winning %. Much worse than Ryu.

Final Round tournament placement nearly identical, does she deserve the same attention as Ryu?

Legitimately asking.

And then they thoroughly nerfed this bland Ryu to the point where they broke him...

Go1 threw ChunLi away for Guile halfway through a matchup against Cammy. That right there tells you how weak Chun is. Probably the only reason he's not 100% using Guile was that he is still learning the combos.

2 Ryu 25th and 33rd

Then factor in her S2 patch whippin, and climatic drop in online statistics.

So should she be looked at similarly to Ryu?

please dont speak about 30th-something places and Daigo in the same sentence like its normal, you are disgrace and pathetic person. Deffending a game where the star (the main reason why SF is the biggest game in the FGC) does terrible because firstly of the random gameplay (took away reactions and execution in IV and then replaced it with jab AA and mashbuttonfest in V) and on top of that they nerf his character back to the stoneage and you think that is okay? Everything with V is okay for you, its perfect even if they nerf F.A.NG more you would still find an excuse for Capcom, well Xian changed character and won in his first try now I am looking forward to see you eat your own words when Daigo hits an easily top8 placement in the next tournament with Guile proving you that it is not him that is not good enough, but the game balancing that is completly wrong!

Huh...

Maybe if people like you didn't spend an entire year whining and making sure Ryu and Nash would get nerfed to hell, maybe Daigo would still continue to play Ryu and Infiltration wouldn't have dropped Nash.

#90
Yawdan said on March 13, 2017 at 3:39 p.m.

Daigo wasn't the best Ryu in S1. I feel like although he might do better with Guile, he won't do any better than he did in S1.

Daigo's results did improve. But with the game changing so much (expecting a second balance change in 3 months), I feel Daigo's transition to SFV, and his ability to adapt to this game, is more the problem than his character choice. (There are players that use lower tier characters than him that perform better than him.)

#91
oscuro said on March 13, 2017 at 3:40 p.m.

Honestly I think think chun could use some buffs or changes reverted back. Like ryu she got overly nerfed. Fixing instant air legs? Yes I agree she needed that, but a lot of other nerfs were just too far. She lacks damage and tools to get damage that she still needs to win.

#92
cigdem said on March 13, 2017 at 3:42 p.m.

GO1 used Guile more than chun.
you can also check how the best chun players made terribly in topanga league. I mean the best ones and long timers (Nuki, MOV) playing her in the world.

#93
Durant31 said on March 13, 2017 at 3:47 p.m.

Not to knock Joel's skill but when I see his replays I will make this assessment. Saying that Joel's skill > Daigo's is not one to be made so easy. Elimination tournaments still have a "luck of the draw" element, which mean Daigo could have had the list of more difficult opponents.

In any event, Ryu remains questionable at best but from my own personal experience lacks footsie tools heavily.

#94
Zephyrus said on March 13, 2017 at 3:51 p.m.

also, I'm tired of this idea that FANG is worse than he was in season 1. It's just not true, no matter your mental gymnastics.

Ibuki was already Xian's secondary character in season 1. She got a lot of meaningful buffs that made her much better than she was in season 1.

One doesn't need to be a genius to see he started using his secondary because she happens to be the better character now. That doesn't mean Fang is weak or bad. Just not as strong as Ibuki while also not having the 2nd best v-trigger in the game which Ibuki has. Or maybe one does need to be.

#95
cigdem said on March 13, 2017 at 3:55 p.m.

very well said, mate, but I do blame capcom for this. this is capcoms game and they should have behaved sound about the patch and get to know the difference between imbecile and sound voices.

I would say just a few nerfs and a few buffs for the balance along with more input reduction would be what the game really needed. instead they just shifted the powers in the balance (!) and left the input as it is.
I still love the game, just a bit disappointed recently.

#98
Durant31 said on March 13, 2017 at 4:04 p.m.

I dont see the reason to wait. Daigo can begin training with Guile now since any nerfs to Guile will undoubtedly be minimal. On the other hand, any changes made to Ryu I can only see as drastic and will require the Ryu player to relearn the character again.

Even something as small as reverting back to S1 st lk means the Ryu player has to now relearn that he has that option/range. Going to Guile makes sense. Sucks as a Ryu fan but he doesnt play for Ryu to win. He plays for Daigo to win.

#99
YanDaMan said on March 13, 2017 at 4:10 p.m.

Daigo giving up on Ryu speaks volumes about Capcom's crappy Season 2 changes.

At least he was an amazing Guile player in ST and SSF4 so it wont be foreign to him.
