2017's Capcom Pro Tour season finally starts tomorrow with a big bang - Final Round is going to have a ton of amazing players, get a rundown here

Posted by Nicholas 'MajinTenshinhan' Taylor • March 9, 2017 at 9:12 a.m. PST

It's been three months since Capcom Cup, and now it's finally time for the Pro Tour circuit to start up again. With a new set of rules, more characters and some big changes to the game's balance, all bets are off on what we're going to see.

Of course, Street Fighter 5 isn't the only game being played at the event. You can expect some top-level hype in several other games as well, including Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, in which Echo Fox's newly picked up Korean champions show up to battle it out against North America's finest.

Continue below for an in-depth rundown of what you can expect from Final Round 20 this weekend.

Top players from all across the world are gathering for Street Fighter 5 to grab those early points and establish themselves as the front-runner early on. This list is by no means complete, but a sampling of what great players you can expect to see at the event includes Liquid|NuckleDu, FOX|Tokido, GRPT|Fuudo, MJS|Haitani, FOX|Momochi, GGP|Kazunoko, BST|Daigo, RZR|Xian, GRPT|MOV, FOX|Justin Wong, CO|Go1, EG|Ricki Ortiz, BX3|Phenom, SPY|Filipino Champ, EG|K-Brad and DNG|Itabashi Zangief. You can find a full list of players at the event's Smash GG page.

As earlier mentioned, Tekken 7: Fated Retribution is also heating up in a major way. Not only are North America's best gathering, as per usual, for Final Round, but we'll also be seeing EVO 2016 champion FOX|Saint, along with another powerhouse from Korea, FOX|JDCR.

While these two games are poised as the main events, there's also huge competition in Mortal Kombat XL, which includes FOX|SonicFox, FOX|Scar and cR|Dragon, just to name a few, and Dead or Alive 5: Last Round with UGS|XCaliburBladez, MrKwiggle, SRM|Hoodless and many more showing up to grab the grand prizes in their respective games.

That's not to understate the level of competition in other games, though. There are also going to be tournaments with top players present for Pokkén Tournament, Super Smash Bros. Wii U, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator, BlazBlue: Central Fiction, King of Fighters 14, Capcom vs. SNK 2 and For Honor.

To make sure you don't miss any of the action, take a look at the schedule for the event below, courtesy, as always, of AceKingOffSuit.

There was balance changes in the last update?

No, but we're talking about CPT, here. The last CPT tournament was Capcom Cup back in early December. The big balance patch was after that.

Picking out a winner is going to be pretty crazy. I guess the 'safest' pick would be Nuckeldu, since he's won pretty much everything he's entered since late last year...but, there's a LOT fo stiff comp showing up.

I mean, who the heck is gonna beat Punk? And, then you have all the top level international attendees...

Can't wait to see Itazan.

Sooo that server maintenance was nothing? And no balance changes now? Are we pretending that never was talked about?? I mean at this point is a bit ridiculous I've supported this game since launch however I'm becoming very frustrated by lack of effort. Also where tf are alex ibuki costumes???

UncleBibby said on March 9, 2017 at 9:32 a.m.

you might wanna make it more clear that there wasn't a balance patch during the 8 hour server maintenence.

or do an article about it.

Agree

KingKong said on March 9, 2017 at 9:34 a.m.

Any chance of seeing For Honor on any stream besides Top 4 ?

Also here's an idea, you know how downtime is really annoying and boring, why not have a dude with a camera roaming the place and showing us cool games and stuff

Going to watch as much Tekken as possible. Rooting for Tanukana. The best Xiaoyu imo. There's a team tournament cool.

Will watch top 8 of KOF and DOA top 8 also. Had my fill of SF with Topanga but take the win Itabashi.

The balance patch was left behind...

Yeah, so many killers. Let the games begin!

Chi_Shinobi said on March 9, 2017 at 10:02 a.m.

They shouldn't have to make an article about the server Maintenance not being a balance patch. Capcom woulda told y'all if it was gonna be one. Y'all need to stop assuming things.

#12
dlmaniac said on March 9, 2017 at 10:04 a.m.

Nemo has a daily job so he cannot travel abroad as much as we'd like to see.

Du and Punk are definitely 2 of the players I'm most excited to see play.

Let's go CPT17!

#14
runuts said on March 9, 2017 at 10:18 a.m.

That would be possible if EH didn't post 237 articles about a possible incoming balance patch. They even had one last week named "why we think there will be a balance patch next week".

#15
grass said on March 9, 2017 at 10:21 a.m.

this is a great idea

SofYen said on March 9, 2017 at 10:21 a.m.

Capcom should have told people that they had nothing to expect from the 8 hour maintenance. Capcom said they will pay attention to communication in the future... They really still disrespect players!

RWA_Announcer said on March 9, 2017 at 10:35 a.m.

All they said about the patch was that we would get more details about it in March. The server maintenance was just that, and we're only 9 days into the month. Personally, I'm expecting it sometime next week AFTER Final Round XX has concluded, which was cause the least amount of damage to the CPT Season, which is important. This lets Final Round, the first Premiere Event, use the current build, then they'll likely the patch before the next CPT event, to give players time to prepare. Makes perfect sense. Nostalgic Costumes didn't start showing up until Season 2, so I'd expect them and the Thailand Stage some time this year. Just be patient.

Chuck_Remixed said on March 9, 2017 at 10:36 a.m.

Punk, Smug, Wolfkrone. All there. Can't wait!!!

#19
RWA_Announcer said on March 9, 2017 at 10:36 a.m.

Exactly.

#20
RWA_Announcer said on March 9, 2017 at 10:37 a.m.

They're only streaming Top 4 of For Honor? That's a shame. Hopefully Kazunoko and Fuudo wreck some shop in it!

#21
Xykes said on March 9, 2017 at 10:55 a.m.

The server maintenance was server maintenance. They never said it would be anything other than that.

And, what kind of anarchist would want balance patches 2 days before a major tourney? No, thanks.

They said news about the balance patch would come early March. Next week AFTER Final Round will still be early March, and that's probably when we'll get news.

#22
aZ1d said on March 9, 2017 at 10:56 a.m.

Are you kidding me? Litteraly on their twitter for SF5 Server they said it as SERVER MAINTENCE.
Capcom hasnt said ANYTHING about this was the time for the patch to also be implemented.
For christ sake, use google and stop believing the BS nonsense that some of the eventhubs writers write.

TheFinalBoosh said on March 9, 2017 at 10:57 a.m.

Welp this is going to be a boring tournament fill with:

Laura spamming St.MK
Balrog Spamming dash punches and his broken buttons
Guile, Cammy and Urien hitting whatever they want because they can walk and smash buttons.

(Sigh)

Im trying to like SFV . . . When's Injustice 2?

You know, the game that the NRS developers care about.

#24
Xykes said on March 9, 2017 at 11 a.m.

Disrespect? What?

Why did you expect anything else? Did they say the maintenance would include anything else? Who told you to expect anything else?

What does this even have to do with this article?

#25
Rahul_S said on March 9, 2017 at 11:14 a.m.

lately he`s only player I`m enjoying or maybe it`s urien :|

While it wasn't a tournament setting, don't forget Du lost 3-0 to both Kazunoko and Fuudo recently.

nice tournament, ton of great matches for sure.

#28
anthonygamer said on March 9, 2017 at 11:28 a.m.

Server maintenance is server maintenance. Can you garbage silver ranks understand this? When did they say that was a balance patch? WTF?

#29
TheFinalBoosh said on March 9, 2017 at 11:34 a.m.

Lol capcom never said it was a balance patch. They said they would consider it. I don't think they gave a date or anything.

CODYYY said on March 9, 2017 at 11:52 a.m.

punk getting way too much credit. he has not beat anyone worth giving him all this. he is hype, mostly cause of his attitude. but i still wonder if he is going to make it into top 8.

where is infiltration ??!!

#32
Pachendrix said on March 9, 2017 at 11:57 a.m.

Wow no love for KoFXIV?????? Even DOA get a Sunday Top 8. Outside of that HUGE snub, this is a pretty strong lineup. I'm definitely looking forward for some CVS action. And We'll see how the first major Season 2 tournament unfolds. There was only 3 SFV tournaments worth watching last year (EVO, CEO, CC), hope this year we can get some exciting sets, or else my must watch schedule will only include the same 3 events. With maybe a few "I don't have anything better to do today" in between.

#33
Pachendrix said on March 9, 2017 at 12:01 p.m.

I'm sorry bro, as critical as I am, of the absolute meltdown Cashcom has self inflicted on the past couple of years. Server maintenance means, SERVER FREAKING MAINTENANCE. If you thought something different that's entirely your fault. If anything you should've used their logic, and realize they've never touched SFV until the last couple of days of the month. So expecting anything to start the month was completely out of the question.

I hope that Punk is gonna go. I'd really love to see him do damage or take the tournament. I think he'd have a really good chance at taking it.

#36
That_guy_who_plays_DOA said on March 9, 2017 at 12:46 p.m.

Who's going to this anyway?

#37
Diomil said on March 9, 2017 at 1:17 p.m.

MenaRD is going, he should be included in the notable names.

#38
EXkbow said on March 9, 2017 at 1:26 p.m.

I just want communication that's all... Now what my online rank has to do with my opinion of a company's business practices idk... I would expect more of someone with such a cool profile pic bebop is awesome. They did SOMETHING in the maintenance I just want to know. Anyway since I ve been blasted a couple times Im very much looking forward to the CPT and while I understand that a patch now would be chaotic to me EARLY in a month is before halfway thru the month which seems to be the case. Look i love the FGC i love SFV that shouldn't mean i cant expect better things from it. Anyways no beef just want to be peaceful

JimmyLoves said on March 9, 2017 at 6:15 p.m.

No balance patch = poor Daigo. Hope he uses guile instead of ryu.

Punk has talent. Anyone can tell he is very strong.

#41
xBreeze said on March 10, 2017 at 5:26 a.m.

Perhaps if Capcom did a better job communicating in the first place, there would be no need for such articles or assumptions.

#42
JimmyLoves said on March 10, 2017 at 8:11 a.m.

It seems that this Final Round has less than half the entrants that last year did (for SF5).

I also find it interesting that they didn't even offer SF4 this year. Anyone know why?

Are the numbers correct that in 2014 SF4 had many more entrants than this years SF5?

Anyways, hopefully everyone can stop bashing SF5 as much [even if you hate it] - just in the name of keeping the Capcom gaming community alive.
