'It could destroy the image of Dragon Ball if a weak character could destroy Goku' - DBF Producer Tomoko Hiroki talks balance, assists and more

The Dragon Ball series is known for upsetting expectations when it comes to character power and potential, but there are some characters in the universe that just don't come close to stacking up against others.

At this point in time there are seven characters (Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Cell, Majin Buu and Frieza) announced for Dragon Ball FighterZ, and while all seven do indeed fit into the "believable fight" category, if staple characters like Yamcha, Kirllin or Hercule make it into the game, their very presence may pose an issue.

"It could destroy the image of Dragon Ball if, for example, a weak character could destroy Goku," Producer Tomoko Hiroki told Siliconera when asked if character power levels were being taken into account.

"We’re trying to balance that out with the 3v3 aspect. There may be characters that are better at assisting or supporting than fighting," she explained. "Thanks to the 3v3 feature we can balance that out with the Dragon Ball universe."

Following the logical progression of that thought, Siliconera asked about the nature of assist characters, implying the question of whether or not some characters may exist more to help out rather than lead the charge.

"There aren’t characters that are only specific for assisting, but basically each of the characters have different supporting skills," continued Hiroki. "We can’t go into the details because we can’t reveal the entire roster. We can tell you it isn’t just coming out and dealing attacks and it is very different across the characters."

While we don't envy the developers with the task of trying to both balance and do justice to the characters of the Dragon Ball universe, we are very excited to see how they weave the varied cast of combatants together for Dragon Ball FighterZ.

The talk on power levels and assist characters is only a singular part of the discussion. Please head over to Siliconera for the full interview.
