King of Fighters 14's free 1.10 update is now live, check out this massive gallery of screenshots showing the new graphics and character colors

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • January 10, 2017 at 10:09 a.m. PST

King of Fighters 14 has received its latest update this morning. The 1.10 patch, which comes free of charge for all users, focuses on the game's graphics.

SNK has implemented improvements to the game's shadows and lighting, giving King of Fighters 14 a better look overall.

Additionally, each fighter on the playable roster, including the two boss characters, have received two new colors to use in combat -- some of which you can see in the images below. These are also a part of the free update and will not cost the player a cent.

The official PlayStation 4 update notes state that 1.10 also addresses "other issues" and improves functionality. Up front, it does not appear that balance changes were made, but we will be keeping our eyes open for any potential alterations that may have been slipped in with this update. .

We have included a large gallery of screenshots featuring the new and improved King of Fighters 14 here in this story. Below are just a handful to get you started, but be sure to hit the jump to view the rest.

After being reminded for months that "graphics don't matter" about XIV, we now have "graphics update" articles every 3 days :)

I'd take a decent rollback netcode over that "update" any day though.

It's amazing how much of an upgrade you can get by improving the lighting. I think we saw something similar with SFV between its reveal & its E3 showing. Hopefully MvCI does the same.

Graphical updates are not all that seems to have been improved. I noticed some moves and trinkets have been completely redone. For example(since I have not tested enough character yet) Mature's supers have all been redone and her animations look smoother and looks like they even added more frames. The skulls are completely different and given more animation frames, and her hand mirror has been completely redone. There are a lot of little things like that, that I will enjoy seeing later. My only gripe is how dark the shading and how saturated the colours look now. The hair lost its realness a bit and the characters at times do look overly processed. There are good and bads but for a first impression mostly good.

Probably because the gap between generations is less and less of an improvement. PS3/360 games already looked really good.

We are basically looking at a jump from Toy Story to Toy Story 2. Yeah it is noticeably better, but not really by much. What has really improved is what you don't think about.

Witcher 3 is a good example. Models and lip-syncing are amazing. But not anything we haven't seen. The environment, number of NPCs, draw distance, and casual AI that you don't pay attention is what is crazy about that game.

Comrade_Dan said on January 10, 2017 at 1:49 p.m.

SFV remains an awful value proposition for the new player. The game plus two season passes is still way more expensive than any new ps4 fighter and all it's dlc or every single season of KI plus S Jago & Kilgore - and with far less content. They mucked up massively with this.

Terrorrisk said on January 10, 2017 at 1:56 p.m.

I'm still on the Graphics Doesn't Matter side of things. I liked the Art Direction of the game itself, and almost everything except Crowds in Antonov Super Arena, the Fireworks in The Bund and perhaps the Flags in Destroyed Arena ran at a stable 60FPS. The update certainly helped the visuals, but I don't think it's going to help much to get new people reconsider this game. Especially if they couldn't tell the visuals improving from trailer to trailer as the early builds became a full product.

Optimization means more than me than the bleeding graphics you're trying to push out. And if you can do both, all the better in my opinion! 60 FPS Primary Characters on a 30FPS Background bothers on a visual level and is more distracting for me than a 60FPS Background going nuts with stuff going on.

It was a great video game with a solid fighter (For the most part) before, and nothing has changed aside from a fresh coat of paint and a previous patch to improve net code and balance things out a bit more. Not bad for their first in-house attempt at 3D when 2.5D and HD Visuals have well been established for years now.

Hopefully whatever update comes next for this game (Anything to further improve net code and overall gameplay is a plus for me. ) isn't 3 Gigs in size. SFV (27.90GB) and BBCF (19.68 GB) already takes up quite a lot on my Hard Drive as it is for games I own as Discs rather than Digitals.

My god, its so amazing that they put all this work into it and hasn't reached a million copys...I think? SNK really does deserve more sales, I can't stress that enough. It is incredible to see how much they love the game even though everyone is in the broken SFV bandwagon.

SNK >>>>>>>>> Capcom SF team. The 4 months of this game has been so much better than SFV's year long run and I suck in KOF,SFV for 11 months have been nothing but frustration with servers, lack of content and boredom of just playing for half an hour.

#47
Montsegur said on January 10, 2017 at 2:07 p.m.

Now now, I can get the SFV Deluxe edition for 98$ on Steam! But yes, on PS4 in Canada it's currently 135$ for everything if you don't want to grind that fight money. Though, Capcom's entire pricing scheme is a little out of whack. Costumes, stages, etc. You don't undersell CPT DLC if it's priced right, you actually hit your goal.

Far more bang for your buck with KoF, unfortunately the online population is so-so depending where you live. Which is the biggest deal breaker of any fighter if you don't have a strong offline scene.

Shocking pricing from Capcom/Sony. But I do agree that the on line communities in the other - far better - games are not as good as what SF is. Plays to that well known name and legacy unfortunately.

Our price for the deluxe and Season pass 2 also works out about $140 Canadian on todays exchange. Then there's the extra premium stages on top which gets it close to $200. It's a damn rip off.

For that price in the UK you can buy GG Revelator all it's DLC, KOF and still have enough left for MKXL on PS4.

Why do people pretend like you can't unlock characters in the game?

#51
Montsegur said on January 10, 2017 at 3:48 p.m.

Problem is, if you solely use FM to unlock chars, you're limited on the stage selections. Once you've done all the main things, you're stuck with the weekly challenges, which do add up, but you have to stay on top of it.

Helgen said on January 10, 2017 at 3:58 p.m.

Come on SNK, first off this is a "fighting game" now a strip show, most of your female characters are dressed for the wrong occasion.

But back to the point, at this point, you are just polishing a turd. The character model simply doesn't have a lot of pixels. Not as severe, but take Virtua Fighter 1 for example, that's a game where you can physically see the pixels. Now you can polish that all you want with fancy shaders and stuff, but the key skeleton, the pixels the character is made up of, is just to few. That is KOF's biggest issue. What KOF Should have done is instead of going with the polygonal look, they should have kept their pixel art look. XIII or XII, personally, I think 12 was better, it just needed to be made of higher resolution. That an fix some of the crappy fire effects and it would be great. The pixel look could have been a great differentiator with what Street fighter has now become.

It's always been both a fighting game and a strip show on the side. Mai was what created breast physics. Of course it's ridiculous, but after all these years, shouldn't it be expected?
In my honest opinion, KOF XIV does fanservice way better than SFV does.

#63
Cmon_Get_Serious said on January 10, 2017 at 6:43 p.m.

It's ridiculous how much this keeps getting mentioned when its been answered so many times by fans and SNK themselves...

Even if SNK was in a financially stable position to recreate the sprites from XII and XIII, you would just be setting but XIV for failure:

1. The simple fact is that fighting games from major companies are in 3D now. SF, MK, etc. 3D is a necessity for your game to be relevant, thanks to how popular Tekken is. Even GGXrd uses 3D models giving the illusion of 2D. Yes there's Blazblue, but Arcsys' flagship and most popular series has always been Guilty Gear and it says a lot that even they made the jump to 3D despite how well received the sprites were. Which brings us to our next point

2. No they can't try what Arcsys did with Xrd and create the illusion of 2D. This team is far too inexperienced and small to attempt something like that. The fact is, the only people who are able to create something as great looking as Xrd is Arcsys themselves. Creating a new engine was the best option in order to keep the game's semi-anime look.

3. Let's look back at KOFXII. Yeah it looked great. XII and XIII are arguably one of the best looking 2D fighting games ever made. Coincidentally, KOFXII is also one of the worst entries in the series because it was a rushed mess with nothing else in the game. The PS2 version of KOFXI had 46 characters. KOFXII? 24. The unfinished data of Mai and K' should be indication enough of how rushed the game was. KOFXIII was able to bump that number to 36 and we accomplished that with several head swaps like Joe/Hwa, Ash/Saiki, Mature/Vice, and the EX characters. Yes, XIII was amazing, but it couldn't help SNK from going under again. Even Xrd's roster completely suffered from the 3D jump, causing favorites like Baiken, Bridget, and Zappa to still be unplayable. And unless your idea is to reuse the same sprites for each new entry, one of the biggest criticisms of KOF for years, they had to jump to 3D. KOFXIV has the biggest roster the series has seen since 2002UM, and unlike 2002, we have 19 completely new characters to use.

Nobody from SNK have any regrets leaving behind pixel art. If you want KOF to remain a franchise, this the best decision they could make. XIV may not be a massive success, but it's hardly a failure

#64
powerincarnate said on January 10, 2017 at 7:01 p.m.

To the guy who said go back to Neogaf, I don't even know what Neogaf is. I'm assuming another game website, but are they fighting game related?? I've been here or on SRK way way way longer than you have. I'm not an 09er.

Now responding to 64. First off, don't confuse gameplay with graphics. Also don't confuse graphics with rush job. SF5 was a rush job, and though unreal engine 4 kinda sucks for hair texturing, and there are clipping issues, SF5 otherwise is a pretty nice looking game. But it was a huge unfinished rush job. So if KOF XII and XIII's gameplay didn't live up to your standards, that isn't the pixel arts fault. That is SNK for not doing a better job gameplay wise. Now I honestly was never a fan of SNK, It just look too stiff to me. But I know a lot of people enjoy it, so I'm not here to discuss gameplay, only the graphics, this topic after all is about graphics.

Just because everyone is doing polygonal gameplay, doesn't mean you have to also. There was a time when everyone was going 3-D not just in character model, but 3D fighters in general. There were a dime a dozen, NOW, however, it seems the fighting game community have gone back to 2D base gameplay, with Tekken being the lone 3D holdout. So just because everyone is going polygonal, doesn't mean sprite based pixel art won't return or isnt' the best option for a company. Square-enix and their constant attempts to give us a linear, no world map, final fantasy have so far failed. The purist still prefer, old school, JRPG type of game play, doesn't have to be sprite, but needs to old world art, towns, good story, lots of different characters and so forth. They've sullied their name by trying to copy western RPGs stylings in my opinion.

Lastly, I know SNK was bought by a chinese company, and didn't have a big budget. It's pretty obvious. Their character models aren't next gen by any standard. If the gameplay is good, then congrats to them, I have no beef against them and a healthy fighting game community with many great games benefits all companies. However, if we are talking about just graphics, then yes, they are polishing a turd at this point.

Again, read my comment again, First, i said, just because everyone is going 3-D doesn't mean you have to, I even mentioned that final fantasy in trying t o be what it isn't, a more westernized RPG kinda ruined it's name because of this.

2nd I said, there was a phase where fighting games were 3D, not just polygonal 3D, but the actual combat was 3D. This was popular in the late 90s, and early 2000s with things like soul calibur, toshinden, VF, Tekken, Bloody Roar, DOA, Even Mortal Kombat tried that route. In the case of MK, they realized, you know what, we prefer the 2D plane over 3D, their 3D games were abysmal.

Last. Of the List you mentioned. SF4 and 5 are polygonal 3D but 2D plane, so still 2D in my eyes. Tekken I said was the exception. Virtua Fighter is Dead, trust me. outside of SF, VF is my favorite fighter, and I was holding on until the end. I'm sure Sega's AM2 division could release another, but I doubt they could even push 100K units at this point. Guilty Gear is 2D plane. DOA sucks, it's focus is stripping instead of fighting. I haven't played the new KI so can't comment, but it didn't look interesting to me. MCV3 is 2D plane. DBZ is a casual game, not anything close to a tournament fighter. Jojo?? not sure what that is. Of the tournament fighters around that is still worth their weight, SF, Guilty gear, MK, Smash, Blazblue and Tekken, All are 2D plane with the tekken exception.

So again, if we are going to have 2D fighting, might as well have some of it be pixel art. Hence why i said KOF could have differentiated itself by sticking to that.

I finally got the update...
I definitely like the Black Angel(though her skin kinda looks greasy) and Shun'ei Howard color schemes.

It also looks like they finally fixed that really weird clipping that appears during one of her supers

So you're saying you want to see more frames in the movement for characters? Its a fair enough request but remember there are 50 here. For now at least the fundamental animations are there and they work in the game. Knowing SNK they will only build on that foundation which hopefully means come KOF XV/XVI there will be little to complain about.

I'm happy there are options for 2D fighters with 3D graphics beyond Street Fighter V.

Or imagine if you had the willpower and bought just the games only and unlocked what you could in them? You wouldn't exceed £100 and wouldn't feel so bad if you wanted to spend a little (I'm talking £10 max) on aesthetic contents like costumes/stages/etc.

I admit the grinding on SFV to get FM is a time theif but I've unlocked 5 additional characters and the Christmas revamp of the New York stage through this and without spending any money yet. I'd considered caving when the season 1 pass was on sale but then thought why should I and stuck to the old-fashioned method.

Anyway, getting away from the heavy subject matter I'm looking forward to giving KOF XIV a session with this new update once I get home. Keep bringing the updates SNK and I'll keep playing your titles.

Because grinding out the content is not a realistic possibility for most players.
As Capcom well knew when they set the system up.

Grinding? There's an easy 31,500FM to earn for every character by doing the trials, tutorials, prologues, and easy and normal survival modes. And then you have the story mode. You can unlock all characters just by doing the (apparently non-existent) single-player content without stepping online.

Capcom couldn't have possibly known how much of their fanbase is allergic to going online and earning the content that is purchasable with FM.

You sound lazy, dumb and misinformed. A deadly combo if there ever was one.

Got to see some of the changes last night, however with that huge roster still have not seen all the colors and the Climax's. I noticed that the original colors also have had their changes. I liked my Ramon's Red and blue , now it's Red and purple. I am really satisfied with the way the game looks now, even Kensou looks awesome now. The only gripe I have with this update is some of the characters skins look a little too dark (K' dash, Mui Mui) and the fact that the Winner screen still looks pretty bad. Would have prefered some still shots like the ones on the character select screen. Overall I am loving the update and hoping to see some new DLC skins for most of the roster. If you are readng this , and you like KOF please buy the game, you won't regret it. That way SNK can keep updating the game and make it even better.
