Filipino Champ: Zero and Morrigan point teams don't lose any match ups; one of Marvel's greatest talks tiers and his five favorite players

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • February 16, 2017 at 8:10 p.m. PST

PG|Filipino Champ is easily one of the greatest Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 players of all time. Earlier today, the Dormammu / Phoenix player took to Twitter to share a few thoughts on some of the game's top tiers.

After recalling a time in 2014 where he predicted Phoenix would be top 3 in the game, Champ noted what he believes are the only S+ tier teams. "I do think that there are only two types of S+ teams: Zero or Morrigan point teams with support / anchor," he tweeted.

Champ feels that these types of teams are strong against any match up in the game.

He goes on to talk about S and A tier teams, Vergil's effectiveness, and more. You can check out the tweets below.

Sorta. He was more relevant in terms of tech. The whole Magneto/Doom/Vergil or Magdoomphoenix infinite/tac fake reset for easy bar was theory crafted and trained on by shadyK and Fchamp.

But aren't Zero and Morrigan characters that are only Top Tier when they have a good assist backing them? Don't they lose a bunch of their threat solo?

Which is why he said Zero or Morrigan with Support and an Anchor is S+.

He didn't say they were best individually.

He said Magneto was the best solo 1v1 character.

I always felt Zero and Vergil (in terms of UMvC3 mechanics with everything but teams) were the best 1v1 characters.

Those two seem like they have broken versions of every essential tool. Insane zoning, ridiculous rushdown, applicable damage, mobility for days.

Then again I'm not a Marvel guy.

Gotomaster said on February 16, 2017 at 9:49 p.m.

Zero is a strong point character due to his loops working well with the right assist combo and great hit confirms. Vergil only really shines when X-factor is involved. Outside of it, he's an average character.

Zero to me is a good character all by himself sure assist help make his mixup game OP but he isnt as defenseless solo as say morrigan would be. Like his mobility is crazy so you cant just run away from him like you can Morrigan and he has way better damage output, Its way easier for him to open you up too. Solo Zero is still S tier his only downfall is his low health, to me Solo zero is like on point virgil, he's more scary with meter so hit him before he hits you if you want to win.

That question is more to the people here, because there are people here who think they're unbeatable regardless of team composition. I'd like to hear their reasoning behind this.

I could totally get that, Zero's mixups are 100% him. Assists just amplify his obnoxiousness tenfold. I just don't think he's still S because it's way easier to mix him up and land a hit on him, so his mixups don't really count there because his defense isn't the best. Assists just cover up that one fault he has which boosts him to S imo. But I don't think he's still S without it. Morrigan is definitely not.

Yeah but wouldn't a 1v1 game play with Vergil popping X-factor at any point in time?

As for Zero his loops work just fine for me without any assists and if the game starts with 1 bar (like normal, not that it's hard to build) all that is needed is one touch, and good luck avoiding that one touch since the directions and options Zero has to land a crumpling hit confirm or hard knockdown is...extensive. Those same ways of hit confirming from multiple angles makes him a mobile beast and in a quick game like that together with his retarded (I believe the best in the game without assists) zoning, he'd be ridiculously defensive with his offense.

I can see a case for Magneto being god tier in 1v1 too tho.

I personally dont think its easy to open zero up he zips and run across the screen swinging that damn high priority sword around whose hit box covers his entire front half and bottom half (falling jumping H) so unless you have a sword he's also beating out all your anti airs and normals protecting himself teleporting and buster shoting his way into safety.

Zero is like a survival type character he's going to cause major damage to the other team for as long as he's alive your partners are playing clean up and if they do they jobs as back up to only hold you done while ganranteeing zero gets at least one lighting confirm so your opponent cant play then their job is done. But again zero doesnt need assist to loop you and he doesnt need assist to lock you down or get in they just come in handy.. he can loop and otg and build meter all on his own with his long combos high damage and priority.

I'm No Marvel expert I can't even play the game and can only watch UMVC3 at the highest level like it's a World Cup, but I'm sure somewhere down the line KBR is suppose to be on any list of Hype/Skill.

I agree with it. The main reason that Zero and Morrigan-based teams are S+, is that they basically DENY your opponent from playing his game. And in a game like Marvel, the only consistent way you can win is to make not letting your opponent have even a slight chance, because using/missing that ever-so-slight chance can cost you the game.

As for Magneto being the best 1v1, I would say Magneto is probably the most "fair" of all the top tier characters in Marvel. He's got rushdown, he's got mindgames, he's got resets, he's got movement, he's got range game, he's pretty much got a full package, and whether he can win or not is based on how you use him.

We can only really judge on used and proven teams. Not all Zero/point Morrigan teams are the best. MorriDoom/Doom/Vergil is definitely one of, if not the best team. I'm not fully confident in saying Zero may Cry is the best team as it has it's weaknesses. I prefer Zero/Vergil/Strider more.

And I'd put RyanLV's team above any of the high level Zero teams.

When considering support, Zero is the best, followed by Phoenix, Magneto, Morrigan and Vergil. Morrigan isn't as strong without missiles. Vergil is great but incoming and meter reliance hinders him for me.

1v1, I'd say Zero is the best as he can actually kill most of the cast solo e.g. he has a solo TOD which can kill Wesker and only uses one meter which he builds. and he's buttons are stupid. Magneto would be second for me. He can]t actually kill solo of any touch. But he can do more off throws than Zero can. But he does less damage than Zero.

I liked his top 5 players list. My favourite are him, LV, RayRay, KBR (haven't got a 5th).

Favorite MvC3 Players all time:

Combofiend
JWong
ChrisG
FChamp

Really can't decide on 5th. Maybe KBR only because even though he is a bit of a douche, he was the first to make Hulk really shine. Nothing special for the rest, just 3 of the gods, but I think people forget just how hype it was when combofiend played in vanilla and very early ultimate. you could be up 3 characters to 1 with xfactor and his last on a sliver of health, and you could never count him out.

Chun-Li finally getting the recognition she deserves. Not to discredit Demon Hyo, Lud etc. but I feel it's Ryan who's opening more eyes. Chun-Li was never a bad character, her damage just didn't justify or balance the effort it took to get it, her rushdown is serious though, and her normals are great, I just wish she did more damage. I respect and appreciate Ryan finding a way to put her damage/meter gain ratio to good use, because her meter gain was always above average too. I'd trade some of that for more damage though.

Yawdan said on February 18, 2017 at 12:56 p.m.

I was a Chun main since Vanilla.

Her damage is fine, you need either execution or to optimize her damage with assists. Eldon Moore (Arithmatic) has a ton of videos of solo combos and team combos for her.

Playing characters for their raw attributes e.g damage, buttons, mobity, can be viable with the right characters, such as top tiers. However, the likes of RyanLV, KBR, iHeartJustice showed how you can work with a characters strength and a smart team construct and strategy, to make characters viable.
