6th Topanga League early results, stream feat. Daigo, Tokido, Nemo, Haitani, Kazunoko, Sako, Fuudo, Mago

Posted by Nicholas 'MajinTenshinhan' Taylor • February 26, 2017 at 3:01 a.m. PST

Updated: This storyhas been updated with full day 8 results.

After a long hiatus, it's finally time for the Topanga League once more. But since we're moving to a new game - Street Fighter 5 - there's no A League set in stone yet, so instead of the two different tiers of leagues, we're going straight in with 3 different groups of top-level players all fighting to advance to the final stage.

Each group plays a online round-robin among the 7 participants, with the 1st placer of each group moving to the finals stage, and the 2-5 placers in each group moving to new, 4-man groups where they play a offline round robin, and the victor of that group moves to the finals stage, now housing 6 players total, which will also be played offline.

Another new feature this year is that the event is free of charge - you can check out the stream over at Topanga's OpenRec channel or their English channel here.

You can find the stream and all of the group information below.

Warned everyone about Chun when Season 2 dropped. Now they're all gonna learn the hard way. Capcom went overboard. She's irrelevant. Use her for fun but don't expect to beat the good characters.

#17
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 4:59 a.m.

She's used to be BROKEN STUPID and people got used to this. Now they have to learn how to play the fair honest way and this takes a while.

And Fuudo is sticking with Mika? That's nice

Fuudo is yet the winner

Really Really... that's a hard time for Season 2 Ryu

#24
TestosteronInc said on February 10, 2017 at 5:47 a.m.

absolutely. I am a huge Daigo fan but watching him play Ryu in SFV just doesnt....fit somehow. Then I watch Nemo's Urien or Bonchan's Nash and it's just JUIIICY. Guiled seemed to fit Daigo much better but he really likes Ryu so all the respect to him for choosing his character. I would have much rather see him play someone else though

I'll be rooting for Nemo this topanga for sure

No way was Chun broken. She did not have tools that were abusable. The only thing she had that was remotely difficult was her iALL and that could easily be countered. Maybe I'm biased because I played chun but even in mirror matches, I was able to AA iALL easily. Maybe it's because I actually know the match up. Her damage output was never INCREDIBLE, she was just able to convert very well. You have a character like Cammy who has better damage output with easier combos and I don't hear anyone crying about her for whatever reason. She's had just as much top 8 appearances as chun and actually has won majors but people still complain about chun being broken. Just learn the matchup.

Playing in season 2, even though Balrog, Urien, and Guile are leagues above Chun-li, I refuse to think it's cuz the characters are completely broken like so many eventhubbers say so loosely. I just have to learn the matchup cuz I don't use have access to those characters yet.

I can see people complaining that there's 3 Chuns in Topanga even though she'll have bad results. "OMG she's still broken. There's more Chuns in Topanga than the other characters!!!! NERF HER!!!!" So far results are pretty poor for all the Chun users but that doesn't matter, THERE'S 3 FREAKING CHUNS IN TOPANGA....OH NOOOOOOOO!!!!

#31
Amoni said on February 10, 2017 at 6:19 a.m.

If Daigo uses Guile he would be a moving moutain but he said it himself that despite being really really strong, "Guile is not fun"

#35
Shimmyfighterv said on February 10, 2017 at 6:31 a.m.

Exactly, but well daigo was renown for his fireball zoning in sfiv, not like sfv ryu had anything else the character excel in anyway in s2 currently, weak mix up, bad footsies buttons, lack of defensive and offensive options really hurt ryu this season

#36
Books said on February 10, 2017 at 6:44 a.m.

Chun was never broken. There were no broken characters in Season 1, which, relative to other Street Fighter games, was very balanced. She was the best character, but that doesn't mean she was overpowered. She didn't have any losing matchups but that doesn't mean she WON every matchup. She was even vs at least Ken, Ryu, Cammy, Necalli, Nash and Guile.

She's worthless now. Destined to come up short in most matches, as she can't compete with the burst damage of the top tiers. She requires extreme precision without any payoff. Barring any new changes, we won't see any Chun in top 4 in any major.

They didn't balance the game. They shuffled the power around, creating a viable top 10 and the rest of the cast who are basically a waste of time if you're trying to be competitive. She's a waste of time.

#37
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 6:53 a.m.

Won every matchup except for 6 in which she was 5-5. Broken AF.

She was the character who won most tournaments in Season 1 and the biggest names in the game didn't even play her. And no, she doesnt require "extreme precision", no one does in SFV.

#38
NoConscious said on February 10, 2017 at 6:55 a.m.

I ain't gonna lie. Galtu's Bison (Dictator) is boss. Straight-up RAW.

#39
CityHunter said on February 10, 2017 at 7:16 a.m.

Chun was the best in season 1 but she was not brocken

#40
Fuzzywuzzy229 said on February 10, 2017 at 7:20 a.m.

I'd say most of her matchups were 5-5 to 6-4. That's NOT BROKEN. Broken is like 7-3 with a CLEAR advantage. She was probably the most balanced character in season 1. She had options but wasn't overpowered. People just didn't learn the matchup and complained instead. Why? Because it's easier to complain than to get better. Just sayin'

What tournaments did she win again? I think she only won like one or two tournaments. I don't see how she won "the most" like you stated. I remember Nash winning a lot at the beginning of the year because of Infiltration. Tokido won one with Ryu. Xiaohai dominated a bit with Cammy. The end of the year was essentially Nuckledu with Guile and Mika. I don't recall Sako, MOV, Ricki Ortiz, GO1, Humanbomb, or Nuki having won anything and they are the more proliferic chun-li players. Actually maybe GO1 won one. This is just off the top of my head.

#41
Books said on February 10, 2017 at 7:24 a.m.

Sako, Nuk, MOVi and Ricki Ortiz are huge names. Some of the most successful fighting game players of all time.

Go1 and Rayray are no slouches.

Vergil is a broken character. AE Yun was way over the top. 3S Chun.

SFV S1 Chun was the best overall character in a mostly balanced game. By mostly balanced, we mean that many matchups were 5-5, some were 6-4 and very, very very few were even considered to be a true 7-3.

She's not viable now. They over nerfed her. Should have left her damage and buttons alone, just slightly dialed back her VT and iaLL. Few will use her and none will win with her. We shouldn't want that for any character.

#42
noob_blasta said on February 10, 2017 at 7:28 a.m.

Broken characters get banned or are used by pretty much everyone. This was never on the cards at all for chun in S1. Broken = akuma in sf2.

She won 26 tournaments according to SRK ranking. She's still #1 with a big lead over Nash.

This doesn't happen with games nowadays because we know a patch is eventually coming.

#45
infamy said on February 10, 2017 at 8:15 a.m.

Chun won the most tournaments? lmao

I can think of 3 tournaments where Chun got 1st, and all 3 of them had relatively no competition.

Ricky won DTN
CJL or whatever his name is won a tournament in France
MOV beat Haitani in some Euro tournament (I'm not even sure about this one, Haitani might have won it)

#46
Fuzzywuzzy229 said on February 10, 2017 at 8:29 a.m.

Half of those tournament wins were not even CPT and the others did not have a ton of good players like RedBull or Dreamhack.

Either way. I just want Chun to be given back the tools she needs to compete, aka cr.lp and St.lk back.

Indeed. Broken is someone like Duo Lon in KOF2003, Necrid from Soul Caliber, and Kokonoe from Blazblue where they were outright banned from Tournments for being far too strong.

capcoms dev team literally raped chun and ryu. you have to be an imbecile not to realise this.
this is not fun. its depressing.

#54
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 9:18 a.m.

You'll NEVER get st.LK anti air back because a character with great horizontal control can't have an braindead easy anti air.

The same way Karin, Vega, Bison and other characters with good pokes have trouble anti airing, so must Chun.

#55
cigdem said on February 10, 2017 at 9:28 a.m.

chuns st LK still anti airs via baiting. thats the use of that button supposed to anti-air. however her st lk was mostly useful in combos, which is impossible now
this alone shows how little you know about this character and you speak with your very a....ss

#56
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 9:34 a.m.

Capcom never intended to have that much range for combos in the first place, also st.LK as anti air was BROKEN and correctly nerfed.

She's still good, but now that 16ers have to actually think to play her ya all getting rekt lmao.

#57
Books said on February 10, 2017 at 9:40 a.m.

Who do you think Chun Li beats in Season 2? Where do you rank her?

Just about everyone with a brain agrees that the top(in no order) is: Urien, Guile, Rog, Laura, Gief, Cammy, Necalli, Ibuki and Rashid

Then you have everyone else

And at the bottom Nash, Alex and Fang.

Everyone Else =/= equal "good." Among that group of everyone else, she has some of the least damage and worst jump in a game all about damage and jump ins.

#58
cigdem said on February 10, 2017 at 9:59 a.m.

capcoms beta dev team is different than the current dev team. thats why they f..ucked up the balance and the game. because they didnt know the properties of the buttons??? so youre telling me that st LK wasnt intended as anti air... what is it intended for then??? it hits high! its an anti air move simple as that!
seriously, even all the chun haters stopped bragging about her and youre still here embarassing yourself.

Ryu/Ken weaknesses are showing...

#60
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 10:33 a.m.

You're only thinking about damage in absolute numbers. Remember tho that Chun has the highest damage a character can get from a 4f cr.LP. She isn't supposed to deal massive bursts of damage but neither does Rashid and he's on your top list. She's a space control character, not a heavy hitter, and excels at it.

Also it's pretty obvious some stupid characters like Urien, Laura and Balrog are gonna be nerfed. Chun Li doesn't need to be changed in anything anymore. She's balanced now.

#61
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 10:35 a.m.

st.LK is supposed to be a SITUATIONAL anti air, not a braindead one button beat-em-all.

#62
Flashnunes said on February 10, 2017 at 10:41 a.m.

damn, i feel kinda sad for Ryu players, Daigo is trying to use him now on S2, because he doesn't think Guile is a fun character to play... despite being stronger, i totally get that... but soon he will start to understand that loosing every tournament badly is not fun as well... gotta move on Daigo

1. You didn't answer the question.

2. Rashid has a waaayyy better jump. Give Chun Li Rashid's jump and she's in the top 10 conversation easy.

You can keep cherry picking points, but the bottom line is she's bad. She has a few good buttons on the ground and good walk speed. Other characters have that and good jumps, VT comeback mechanics, great damage and better AAs. She's trash and the results will bear that out until she's adjusted.

And you're talking to someone who in the first few weeks of the game, called out exactly why she was the best, the fact that it would take until about EVO before we started seeing real Chun, and the tools that only top Chuns would start using. She was great before, now she's trash. Overnerfed. Bad pick.

explain the situational please.

I see youre a bison player and you got mad when she anti-aired your devils reverse which is not an invincible move. I saw some moves beats chuns ex legs we dont get mad about it.

you sound like a mad cow, rather than a player.

#72
dlmaniac said on February 10, 2017 at 2:36 p.m.

Chun was never broken in S1. Not a single seasoned pro such as Ricky, Sako, and Nuki was able to win a premier tournament with Chun. She's easily 3-7 against Guile and 5-5 versus several other strong chars. Chun was a one-IAL-trick-pony so once IAL is basically nerfed to useless all her weakness, such as floaty jump / no wake up / lengthy charge time / slow startup, is exposed. Now with her already mediocre damage nerfed she's a side-show in S2.

#73
cigdem said on February 10, 2017 at 2:38 p.m.

Of course Daigo should have picked Guile. Capcoms spastic management team made a change about which character they want you to play, not the ones that you wanna play and enjoy. Im really losing faith in this game.

#74
Rank57 said on February 10, 2017 at 3:01 p.m.

Every player who shows up at Daigo's stream is usually destroyed by Fuudo's Mika, so I wonder if anyone can stop him this time.

#75
oscuro said on February 10, 2017 at 3:33 p.m.

Yeah and I would put ryu like right above these. I think S2 ryu is right near the bottom maybe a few spots above give or take

And at the bottom Nash, Alex and Fang.

#76
Amoni said on February 10, 2017 at 6:53 p.m.

Chun S.LK broken AA is fine because it is a 1-button AA move, but AA jabs, which are way worse, are not fine.

OK the stupidity is real.

#77
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 7:20 p.m.

Situation: a jump in from afar to stop opponents from pressing the button. Not supposed to be used close or EVEN WORSE, beating crossups. You have to use either her air to airs or her HK anti air for this. A one button beats them all = brain dead.

And any move from any character can beat Devil's Reverse because it has a big hurtbox. It's not a move supposed to be spammed, the same way Chun isn't supposed to have a brain dead anti air button.

You sound like a 16'er.

#78
Mormegil said on February 10, 2017 at 7:21 p.m.

Daigo had trouble with Ryu in S1, especially when playing Haitani. Now he's going to have even more of a rough time in S2. Hell, Tokido was the best Ryu in S1 and even he switched to Akuma. lol

Well, good luck to Daigo for the rest of Topanga. He's off to a rough start.

The Itabashi match was so hype, btw.
And I guess I missed Bonchan's match, but good for him. He seems to be the only person making Nash work. I don't know how he does it.

#79
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 7:25 p.m.

I'm not gonna listen EVERYTHING i think about Chun Li, all her matchups and the complete tier list. A character doesnt have to have a good jump in to be good, Ibuki being another case. You want Chun to have no weaknesses at all, no character is supposed to be like this except Ryu, who is the jack of all trades and is supposed to have no weaknesses but no great things either.

Well time will tell. She's a balanced character like Karin and Ken are right now. The stupidity of the top tiers will be nerfed in the next patch and we'll have more variety. People just like to abuse what's stupid.

#80
Clamper said on February 10, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.

We had a lot of Chun Li's on Capcom Cup's top 8 and none of them were big winners in USF4.

Ricky got second at Capcom Cup and honestly she isn't even THAT great. While Sako and Nuki are gods Sako is kinda out of the loop because of his baby daughter and so was Nuki for disliking SF4.

You forgot MOV who i think was actually the best Chun but he wasn't a big name in USF4 either.

And how Chun has NO WAKEUPS, my man? EX SBK is one of the best wakeup moves now.

#83
MooMeowCat said on February 11, 2017 at 12:52 a.m.

You're looking at the wrong stuff and probably at the wrong time. Instead you should see how or why the Chun Li players were able to win any games at all.

About 80% of the time when Chun Li lost life lead, the only way to win was to use the 17-ish second long vtrigger or IAL pressure. BOTH are nerfed to the ground now and she pretty much has nothing, no pressure, no damage, and no conversion.

Just a standing fierce now that doesn't even combo into anything unless you vtrigger cancel.

#84
Silent_Jacob said on February 11, 2017 at 1:14 a.m.

Yea, you Chun li mains need to calm down, your still mid tier. She's better than almost half the cast. There's a reason all the prominent Chun li players are sticking with her. Same thing with Mika, unlike Nash and Ryu who were never considered top 5 are now low tier because of the nerfs. Daigo should definitely just pull out his guile and he will start winning something. Bonchan sticking with Nash is honestly surprising. Also interesting is that Xian said he will stick with Fang and considered him mid tier in s1 and even maybe in s2. You guys should also check out infils Juri at his stream, looks pretty good, plays kind of similar to his nash with the movement.

This Clamper dude is trying to rewrite the past and present with his Chun-li talk like people try to act as if Elena wasn't a problem in USFIV and jumped on her not being used in Capcom Cup to point she couldn't be 'stupid' XDDD

Chun-li is still fine, if anything, they just have to buff her v-skill speed and possibly make some normal less negative on block and boom little crying baby will finally stop trying making history again.
