Disney announced this morning that they will be purchasing 21st Century Fox. After several weeks of reports claiming that the two companies were in talks, the deal has been officially confirmed.

21st Century Fox will be acquired for $52.4 billion, and the transaction includes its film and television studios. In their official statement, Disney makes specific mention of popular entertainment properties such as the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool, among others.

Acquiring FOX enhances Disney's ability to provide consumers around the world with more appealing content and entertainment options.

Fox's remaining assets include Fox News and Sports. 21st Century Fox will form a new company with these assets that will be spun off to its shareholders.

“The acquisition of this stellar collection of businesses from 21st Century Fox reflects the increasing consumer demand for a rich diversity of entertainment experiences that are more compelling, accessible and convenient than ever before,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Disney.

"We’re honored and grateful that Rupert Murdoch has entrusted us with the future of businesses he spent a lifetime building, and we’re excited about this extraordinary opportunity to significantly increase our portfolio of well-loved franchises and branded content to greatly enhance our growing direct-to-consumer offerings."

This deal ends over 50 years of media expansion by Fox owner Rupert Murdoch.

So, what does this mean for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite?

Though this deal doesn't mean that X-Men and Fantastic Four characters are locks for the crossover fighting title, it definitely betters the chances of such DLC coming to fruition.

With the release of Marvel Infinite back in September, fans were unhappy to see that staples of the versus series such as Wolverine, Magneto, and Dr. Doom weren't among the playable cast. Many attribute this to the fact that 21st Century Fox held the film rights to both franchises.

This acquisition puts these IPs under the same umbrella as characters like the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other large Marvel Comics film franchises.

With each of the aforementioned franchises already having representation in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, it seems much likelier now that we'll be getting X-Men, Fantastic Four, and possibly even Deadpool characters in the game sometime in the future.

Capcom and Marvel recently wrapped up their first wave of DLC fighters for Marvel Infinite this year. Sigma, Monster Hunter, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Venom are all available in-game now.

Last month, we heard rumors of numerous characters supposedly set to join the cast. The Reddit user claimed Wolverine, Cyclops, Psylocke, Magneto, Storm, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, and many others in their report.

Though this alleged leak should be taken with a large grain of salt, perhaps the Disney deal could actually make some of this a reality.

With the start of 2018 right around the corner, we could be seeing an announcement for more DLC characters. Let's hope that some of the X-Men are revealed.
